WANTS TO CARRY GUN Federal Officials Impatient Because Murphy Made i His Information Public. Samuel S. Murphy, subpoenaed to ap- pear before the federal grand Jury of the northern district of California at San Francisco, in connection with the investigation inves-tigation of plots to blow up powder plants in the United States, including the Hercules Her-cules Powder company's plant at Bacchus, Bac-chus, near Garfield, left this city for San Francisco yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Murphy said before leaving: Sait Lake 3'esterday that he was apprehensive he might meet with violence In some manner, man-ner, either on his journey or at San Francisco, f rom agents of the Interests that Crowley is believed to eerve in planning plan-ning the destruction of powder plants over the country. He suggested that his deposition, as to the . letters received ought to be sufficient and felt that it was not necessary for him to make the journey jour-ney to the coast. The man's fear that he might .be subjected to some act of re- , prisal for his appearance was so strong that he declared his intention of traveling travel-ing armed. Got Two Letters. Murphy said yesterday that he would testify that he received from C. C. Crowley, Crow-ley, now under arrest !n San Francisco, a letter making a proposition to destroy the plant at Bacchus for the consideration of a "b piece of money." Murphy said that he recognized the signature of Crowley Crow-ley in the letter which be received from htm In San Francisco about the last of August. He received only one other letter, let-ter, he said, and that was from a person In Salt Lake, who signed himself "Lieutenant," "Lieu-tenant," and advised him to get in touch with his "friend" In San Francisco. Considerable impatience was expressed by federal officials at the federal building build-ing yesterday over the action of Murpliv in giving out the Information published yesterday morning. He had been instructed instruct-ed to say nothing to anyone, said Leon Bone yesterday. He was especially cautioned cau-tioned not to talk to newspaper men, this caution being concurred in bv D. S. Cook, assistant United States district attorney. Talks Freely. Murphy, however, became convivial during dur-ing the progress of the evening and, remembering re-membering that he had talked to one newspaper news-paper man before the admonition of Mr, Bone was given, thought that he might as well have his say out, according to his explanation to Mr. Bone yesterday. He accordingly talked rather freely of his being be-ing called to testify before the grand jury in San Francisco and of the information that he would testify to upon being called as a witness against Crowley.
