Show WOMAN'S BODY TAKEN TO OISSECTI ROOM Later It Is Returned to the Morgue by Order of Justice Martmeau EXPLANATION IS MADE Dr C N Ray Talks of Ac tion in Case of Mrs C G Crenshaw How the body of Mrs Cornel a G Cren shaw who a ed at the county hospital last Sunday mornins was taken from the hospital to the morgue of Larkin Hull undertakers from the morgue to the dis sectlng room of tha University of Utah and thence to the morgue again where It lies awaiting further wcrd from rela tlves and the orders of Justice of the Peace L. C Marlger acting coroner of the prec net In which the w oman died Is a story that has not heretofore been to d Mrs. Crenshaw died from a gunshot wound lnfl cted on the night of Decern oer s in a boutn West Temple street rooming house by F B Ahrold who Im mediately afterward committed suicide. The woman hovered between life and death for days then steadily improved until last Sunday morning when, during a fit of coughing a blood vessel in her wounded throat was broken and she quickly bled to death. The Utah statute expressly provides It shall be the duty of every justice of the peace to hold Inquests on the bodies of such persons as are sup posed to have died by unlawful means within the precinct of such justice Another Prowsion. The Utah statute, in another section, further provides The justice of the peace shall cause the body of a deceased person which he shall have been called to view to be delivered to his friends if any be. present within convenient dis tance If not, be shall cause it to be decently burled, the expense to be paid from any property of the deceased de-ceased or if there be not sufficient property of the deceased to tay the necessarv expenses of burial the same shj.ll be charged against the county A later provision of the statute, how ever gives the county attorney the power to authorise the turning over of an un claimed body to the medical department of the university If there be no protest on the part of relatives. The body of Mrs. Crenshaw was removed re-moved from the county hospital to the Larkin Hull morgue Monday It was held there until Wednesday and in the meantime the undertakers conducted a search for relatives of Mrs. Crenshaw but received only a message from C C Crenshaw the husband of the woman, who resides In Jackson Term, that he was unable to have the body sent east for burial. View of Dr Ra. Dr C Jv Kay acting superintendent of the county hospital, said last night that he presumed the coroner of the pre etnet In which the woman died was not notified because there was no question as to bow she came to her death. He added that he believed the undertakers thought Jhey were acting within their rights In sending the body to the university after they had received no guarantee that the expenses of burial would be borne by friends or relatives. When Mrs. Crenshaw died she had In ber possession about 133 In cash and three rings, one a diamond, one a ruby and one a wedding ring This property was taken in charge bj the clerk of the county hospital and remained In custody of that official until Th sday Justice of the Peace L. R Martineau. acting coroner In the precinct of the city In which the shooting took place, called upon Mrs Crenshaw a few davs before she d ed and discussed with her the clrcumstan -es of the tragedy vednesdav Judge Martineau lesrned bv chance that the body had been taken to the I nJ erslty of Utah He consulted the county attorney's office and ordered the body of Mrs. Crenshaw taken again to the morgue. This was done and the county attorney notified Justice L. C Marlger who took charge of Mrs. Cren s haw's effects. Justice Marlger said yesterday that he was not officially notified pf Mrs. Cren Shaw's death until Thursday The Larkin Hull firm explained vester day that one of Mrs. Crenshaw's brothers M M. Bledsoe had been found in po kane. Wash, and advised of the clr um stances. The body will be held by the undertakers under-takers pending word from Mr Bledsoe and orders of Justioe Marlger |
