The cities visited by the Wyoming winner are shown in the order vis ted Mrs Le b who won sec ond followed pract cally the same route and used the same number of c ties tut made an error in calling B sbee, Ariz Douglas Of the twelve part c pants who used 3o6 cities only two followed routes that were pract cally alike throughout Another co neidence was that many travelers began their journey at Poughkeeps e N The smallest number of citie3 vis ted by any award winner was 308 Th s was J F Yt ard s so lutaon who had nearly as great a population as F Godfrey Kenney who visit ed forty seven more cities than Mr Ward but whose total of population was slightly more than 6000 greater The awards were offered, however for the solutions which showed the greatest aggregate population and only if more than one participant had reached the same figuree would the number of cit es visited have been con sidered. Seven Outsiders Win Of the twenty awards seven went to participants in outside cities Mrs W Farr and A E Oliver scored honors for Ogden. J F Ward put Provo in the list Twin Falls through E F tettler and St. Manes, through Via cent Gregg weTe Idaho s victorious towns and Draper Utah -was the only outside Utah town exclusive of Ogden, to be represented. Nevada deep te the fact scores of solutions were filed by residents of that state failed to obtain ob-tain a place. Many Solutions Voided Hundreds of solutions were voided because lines were used contrary to the rules. For instance, many partici pants crossed their own lines or changed from one line to another where no cities formed a timet on Where Travelgamers made errors m naming cit es the population of such cities was deducted from the total sub mitted, but the number of cities re mained unchanged. The Travelgame working chart was absolutely accurate and although a number of players misnamed mis-named a few cities these mistakes would have been avoided by a little more study The winner of the first award had every city visited named correctly Four States Ebgible All residents of Utah Idaho he vada and Wyoming were invited to take part m the Travelgame and from the continuous stTeam of queries for working charts and the resultant flood of solutions is evident that a great majority accepted the invitation The Travelgame appealed to all ages and classes instantly because it was differ ent and offered entertainment and in structlon at one and the same t mo Instructors Show Interest An unusual interest was manifested by principals and teachers in schools, and scores of requests for bundles or working charts were recc ved for use in classes Hundreds of requests from other states than those named were received re-ceived and those applv ng for charts made rla n that they ntended playing the Travelgame in ep te of the fact they were not el gible to subm t solu t ons College Wanted Charts The following letter is an illustration of the widespread interest taken Agricultural College Miss Feb "o 191o The Salt Lake Tribune bait Lake City Utah I understand that you are run rung a new kind of a contest en titled Travelgame and that a map or chart of the United States is used If it would not be asking too much, of you I would appreciate it very much if you would kindly send me a couple of these maps and full information as to the mode of working and list of cities used etc The reason for my want ng thee maps is that the idea appears to bo well suited to the use of the pr mary school teacher in teaching geography Yours verv trnly E C TTLLMAV "Daddy" Eats Again One player enclosed the following little verse with her solution We have been debghted with The Tribune Travelgame For it s been a source of pleasure ever since it came And now that the tnp is over we 11 be lonesome sure enough Without dotted 1 nes and circles and the population stuff But there s one great consolat on now that it is all complete Poor Daddy and the babies will get something f t to eat MRS DUE Hundreds of enthus aetic letters were received and all brought out that the writers would feel they had big returns in the fun and knowledge acquired whether they won awards or not The Tribune congratulates the winners and nonwinners al ke for all who took part know the r good old USA now nearly as well as they know the r A B C s. and the phrase See America First 1 has a deeper meaning throughout the ntermountain west than it d d before The Tribune s Travelgame was an nounced 1st 4ward Round tr p t cket to Tanama-Pac f c and Panama Cal forn a expos t ons, plus 10 times anount pa d for fcubscr p tion Maumnm value of th s award $1 0 00 "nd Award Same tr p as 1st award pi s 5 ty es amount pa d for subscription Maximum of th s a ard $110 00 3rd Award Same trip as 1st award plus 3 t mes amount paid for subscr pt on Maximum of th s award $ 6" 00 4th Award Same tr p as 1st award plus amount pa d for subscrip t on Maximum value of th a award $ 6" 00 5th Award $3o 00 in gold pi a amount pa d for subscript on Max ununi value of th s award $ 47 00 6th Award $95 00 m gold plus an ount pa d for subscr pt on Max lmum value of th s award $ 3 00 "th Award $lo 0O in old plus amount pa d for subscr pt on Max imum value of th s award $ 00 8th Award $15 00 merchandise order good on any Salt Lake mer chant Maximum value of th s award $ 15 00 9th and 10th Awards $10 00 merchand se orders good on anv Salt Lake merchant Maximum alue of these awards $10 00 Total $ 20 00 11th to "0th Awards $o 00 n erchandise orders good o any Salt Lake merchant Mai mum value of these awards $5 00 Total $ 50 0) Total $64 00 |
