Show TO GROW CROPS ON ATHLETIC FIELDS England s Food Supply to Be Enlarged by Plowing Golf Courses and Football Fields. x LONDON' ug o Proposals that golf courses cr cket and football fields be plow ed for ra s ng crops dur ing war t me ha e been reaching the War office A J Sherwood secretary of the Wal ton Heath Golf club at Epson po nts o t that there are at least 200Q golf cburses n the country wh ch could spare some f not cons derable land for cult vat on The Walton Heath club has already started an exper ment oi twel e acres under cult vation and its secretary bel eves that if other clubs includ ng cr cket and football organiza tions would do the same the scheme would provide employment for thou sands of unsk lied workers and add con side ably to the nat on s food 'upply In these days of self sacr flee no one appears to be wanting to enioy h n self on the golf 1 nks They are generally deserted and probably w 11 be ' to the end of the war L B Gull ch secretary of the Golfers club has s g gested that the hundreds of club houses should be offered to the m litary author t es for use as hospitals Mr Gull ch is send ng a letter to the secretary of every club and expects that n a few weeks if the war office favors the schen e pract cally every clubhouse in the country will be equ pped as a hospital It s thought that those on the east coast m ght be espec ally useful I find said Mr Gullich that golfers are leiy eager to do someth ng useful and so far no one has been able to th nk of anyth nr better than gv ing up the clubhouses There must be at least 2000 which could be used as hosp tals, or n any other way that m 1 tary author t es th nk fit The b gger j ones have been made out of luxurious country houses and could be trans formed nto hosp tals n a few days to I accomn odate some hundreds and there are well over a thousand smaller ' houses wh ch could put up from twelve to fifty w tl only si ht alterations The clubhouse staff would be avail able for the cool ng and attendance If the var ous clubs respond as I th nk the w 11 there would be no dfficultyi in offering the war office 000 beds ' j Another of M f roposals is us ng the 20 000 cadd es who are now idle to help farmers ret m the harvest |
