Show SWINDLER BROUGHT j TO CITY FGR III Maurice Chancy to Face Charges Here After Term at McNeil's Island. Having served thirty -seven months in the federal prison at McNeil's island for using the United States mail to fleece a large number of credulous piviucers of eges and butter in and around San KVan-cisco, KVan-cisco, Maurice Chaney was brought to Salt Ua Ite yesterday hy Deputy I 'id ted States Marshals Thomas Jefferson Fleetwood Fleet-wood and Frank Elbert. Jr., or Tocoma. and turned over to United States "Marshal A qui la Nebeker to answer an indictment for the same offer.se in this district. During the summer of 1f12. it is charged. Chanev came to Salt Lke. called himself the Utah Butter & Egg company and proceeded to flood the country In and about Salt Lake with let- I ters through Uncle Sam's mail, offering ; to pay more money for eggs and butter ; than any other commission man here. He j got the business, and It was a big business busi-ness in point of volume. He took the I shipments, sold them and suddenly left Salt Da k e , ca r ry i n g with him the p ro -ceeds from the produce consigned to him about $500. When the federal grand jury met in ! the fall of that year it indicted Chancy, i who had many aliases, for using the malls i to defraud. After leaving Salt Uake Chaney went to San Francisco and repeated re-peated his Salt Lake performance. He was caught, tried, convicted and sentenced sen-tenced there to four years at McNeil's island. The Salt Lake federal authorities authori-ties learned of the conviction and notified noti-fied the warden at McNeil's Island prison to hold him, when his term was up. Hence his presence here. Chaney's case will come up at the forthcoming term of the federal court. Chaney will plead that, when he was tried in. and sentenced by, the California federal fed-eral court, his offense in Salt Lake was considered and operated in influencing the court to giving him such a long term four years. He will ask that he be dismissed. |
