Show THE OTHER Iffl gr FELLOW HAS f M jpfjt TROUBLES TOO 3jtf WHAT'S the matter?" asked Mr. Suave Floorwalker of his perspiring and stern-faced dreys goods clerk as that worthy began industriously to roll up and place bark on the shelves the mountain of cloth lying on the counter before him. His query had been prompted by the frown on his clerk's usually smiling countenance and by the ginger he was displaying as he attacked1 the job before him. "Have you been reading those trouble stories in The Tribune?"" the clerk offered of-fered by. way of answer. And then he , went on, without waiting for a reply: Well, we have ours also. A stylishly stylish-ly gowned and evidently wealthy woman came sauntering along here about half an hour ago and sat down. She had the appearance of a person looking for something that she .could not find. I saw her eyes roaming over the shelves of dress goods and also noted that she carried no sample. Naturally Natu-rally 1 supposed that she was endeavoring en-deavoring to make up her mind regarding re-garding the goods for a new gown, so I turned, and, taking down a few of , our latest and most stylish patterns, I spread them before her. She fingered the goods, and for a moment I began to feel that she was about to make a choice. I soon noticed, no-ticed, however, thnt same "hunting for something" expression creep into her eyes, and saw from the way that she began to glance from the goods and up and down the aisle that I had not struck her fancy. I hurriedly took down a few more bolts and was again gratified to' see her interest revive. Well, that thing went on, her interest reviving and waning with each new bolt of cloth until I had shown hrr almost everything every-thing we had in that line. She was still unsatisfied. .1 came to the conclusion that she was trying to match a pb?ce of cloth from memory, and 1 pulitelv suggested that if she was and would bring in the sample 1 should be pleased to match it for her. And then, may 1 be buried under this pile of cloth, if she didn't answer: I "No. I thank you. I have just lost I my pet, pooile in this store and 1 was waiting fur him to find mo. Thank you just the same." And I ml id: "If vou think he is he-hind he-hind those last two bolts of goods I shall be pleased to take them down." |
