Show CRUISER RESCUES CREW OF SCHOONER American Vessel Wrecked on Coral Reef, but All on Board Are Saved. ON BOARD IT. S. S. CALIFORNIA, July 3, by wireless to San Diego, Cal., July 4. The cruiser Cleveland returner! re-turner! to Acapulco today from Clipper-ton Clipper-ton island, which she left June 2i, haying hay-ing on board Captain Jensen, his wife, two children, the first and second officers, offi-cers, the cook and six seamen of the American schooner Nokomis of San Francisco, which was wrecked on a treacherous coral reef at 1 o'clock in the morning of February 2S. From the first the position, of the Nokomis was hopeless and she was abandoned the following day. The castaways were cared for by the inhabitants in-habitants of the island, who only number num-ber thirty, until a growing shortage in the necessaries of life made a -trip to the mainland imperative. Two volunteers undertook the voyage voy-age of 670 miles to Acapulco, and accomplished ac-complished it safely. Owing to the disorganization of all commerce wrought bv civil war. no assistance from the Mexicans could be had, and it was necessary to dispatch a man-of-war. The Cleveland was Assigned to the rescue by Rear Admiral Howard and carried supplies for the islanders, as well as brought back the castaways. Those rescued are: Captain Jensen, Mrs. Jensen, two children, Mates Halvorsen and Hansen, Seamen Oliver, Hendrickson, Halvorsen, Miller, Donkeyman and Brown, and Cook Knowles. All are now on board the Pacific Mail liner City of Sydney, bound for San Francisco. |
