Show BRITISH FREIGHT STEAMER IS ASHORE NORFOLK. Va . Feb. 22. Tho British freight steamer Sachem. Captain Evans, bound from Liverpool for Norfolk, went ashore during a storm today, live mllos north of Hog lfland on tho upper Virginia Vir-ginia coast. Tho ship first appeared to bo in a serious se-rious position nnd life savers went to the rescue and stood by ready to take the crow off. The high seas, whlchv caused tho vessel to pound heavily, subHlded, and the Sachem Is expected to float upon the next high tide. The revenue cutter Itasca has gone to her assistance. Tho Sachem carries a crow of twenty-four twenty-four men. She is a freighter exclusively. Life-savers of the Kill Devil hill station sta-tion today picked up nlno lifo-bclts that were cant on the beach by the high seas now prevailing. The belts were marked "S. S. California." There aro several steamers of that namo, none of which lias been reported in trouhle. It ls believed that the belts are old ones and were probably thrown overboard. |
