Show SAYS ROSS IS MALIGNED. Wllllnm Asher Says Retiring Po6tmn3tcr Has Been Misrepresented. LKHI. July 8. To the editor of The Tribune: The article In today's Tribune regarding the postofflce situation here Is misleading In .everal respects. The facts a i-o about as follows; Postmaster Ross some three weeks ago notified U'-chairman U'-chairman of thc Republican executive committee that In the near future ho. intended in-tended resigning his position and asked that the committee be called together to name his successor. All but four of the forty members of tho committee mot and unanimously. voted to call a general mass convention of the Republicans of Lehl and to Indorse to Congressman Howell thc name of the candidate receiving the majority ma-jority of those present at thc convention. conven-tion. For eight days thc candidates and their friends Importuned the local Republicans Re-publicans for support. Thc meeting, when It convened, filled every seat and exhausted thc standing room of the Lehl opera house. Chairman Hopkins stated that thc meeting was for Republicans only and requested the few Democratic spectators not to vote. A resolution was handed to (he secretary secre-tary Indorsing President Taft and the Republican platform, but Mavor W. U. Racker, thinking that this was not a pari of the convention's business. Ihu resolution was tabled. All 3lx candidates had printed ballots, which their friends distributed lo thc audience. A resolution was also Introduced binding the candidates candi-dates to abide by the decision of the convention, con-vention, but as one of them refused to sign It this resolution was also tabled. The chairman then appointed eight tollers to gather and count tho ballots, and the first, ballot resulted as follows: W. F. Dult. 01; Guy Evans. 25; Mrs. ICffle Day, 227: G. L. Peterson, 25; Fred Merrill. 10. and W. L. Webb. 14. Guy 13 vans then mudc a motion to make It unanimous for Mrs. Day, and tho motion carried without a dissenting vote. The majority of those present were not women and not a single objection was raised to any of those taking part or to the method of voting. As lo Postmaster Ross having any Interest In his successor suc-cessor because of a rental oh his building, build-ing, he today exhibited to tho writer a ten-year lease on tho present quarters signed by tho postofflce department, which lease would still be In force, no mntter who his successor Is. As lo thc tight being between Mrs. Day and Merlll. a reference to the vote shows Merrill receiving but 10 of the 104 voles polled, making him fourth In the race. Respectfully. WM. ASIIKR, Secretary of thc Republican Committee and Secretary of thc Republican .Mass Convention. |
