Show BRYAN'S PEACE SMOKE. Secretarr Bryan is quoted as declaring declar-ing that he does not expect war so long as he is head of the State Department, which is a sentiment which is liable to more than one construction. If he means that he will do servile things, such as making himself an errand er-rand boy for the Japanese Embassador again, or undertakes to engage the country to do everything that a foreien nation may desire, even to the getting down on knee and begging for peace, then the sentiment is not only ignoble, igno-ble, but so revolting and cowardly that the people of this country will not stand for it a minute. If, however, he simply means his hope that there will be no war during his time in office, ad that peace may be honorably maintained, then his hope can heartily and unreservedly be seconded sec-onded by every intelligent citizen of the United States; always provided that peace is not purchased by a base surrender of National honor, National dignity, or National interest. |
