Show LEWIS CONVICTED OF MTOUGHTER Compromise Verdict in Case ' of Alleged Murderer; Sister's Trial Commences Jan. 22, .OROVILLU, Cal.. Jan. 1. A verdict or manslaughter was relumed today by th Jury in the case of Arthur Lewis, the young man tried In the superior court here for the murder of his 13-ycar-old siep-nlecc. Helen 13nmball. The Jury, which had been out since 11:15 a. tn. Saturday, Sat-urday, brought in the verdict at 1:20 p. m. today. The verdict was a compromise one, the Jury for many hours having stood eight for conviction of murder in the first do- grce and four for acquittal. Sentence will be pronounced Thursday. Mrs. Rumball. step-mother of Helen, Indicted In-dicted jointly with Lewis, will be brought to trial January 22. Sho Is a ylstor of Lewis--. Lewis admitted Ihlr, but denied that he had used force- on r.hi girl. Medical examination ex-amination showed, howevr. that the child's neck had been broken in two places, and in such a manner Hint, according ac-cording to Iho physicians, k could not have bscn caused by hanging. |
