Mrs. Tuft had a new frock for tho party, and a very elegant one it was, too, composed of American beauty brocaded bro-caded velvet, the top of the corsage of point lace, and a baud of fur around the bottom of the skirt. At the judiciary reception last yoar . the venerable Chief Justice Fuller was i l he first to greet; the president, but this year his place was taken by his successor in office, Justice White, ac-'uompaiucd ac-'uompaiucd by .Mrs. White, who was attired at-tired in silver gray satin embroidered in crystals. As'is always the case since the Tafts have had the running of the White House receptions, this one ended in a dance, but this time Mr. Taft did not join in, nor did Helen, as that popular voting lady was booked for another dance and could not patronize the home grown one. She honored the reception until almost midnight, looking very sweet in her favorite pale blue evening even-ing gown. After the formal receiving of their guests the president, and Mrs. Taft promenaded through the rooms, greeting greet-ing their friends and chatting just like plain, ordinary people. Things arc lots more "homey" at the White House than they were during tho last ad-tninitlni.inn. I In the brilliant assemblage was Mrs. i ' Perry Heath, formerly of Salt Lake ' Oitv looking very handsome in a toil- ette of nattier blue satin, trimmed in crystals; Senator and Mrs. Sutherland, 1 , Senator and Mrs. Smoot. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smoot, Senator and Mrs. Car-i Car-i . ( . ter of Montana were also among those i f ; who were invited to the reception. Scott, presi- ' dent general, D. A. R., her guests of 1 1 honor being Mrs. Lurton. wife of Mr. Justice Lurton: and Mrs. Hughes, wifo ( of Justico Hughes of the supreme court, , k, both ladies members of the D. A. R. Mrs. Scott and her assistants received 1 their guests in the president's suite, ' 1 which was furnished 'by the state ot J. Mrs. Sutherland received at an in formnl tea Jaat Thursday at the Highlands, High-lands, where she has a handsome apart-mont. apart-mont. Assisting her in receiving was her very attractive house- guest, Mrs. Sutton, and Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Mac-donald Mac-donald and Mrs. Timothy Ansberry, wife of the representative from Ohio. Frank M. Cashin of Evanston, Wyo., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Hickcy i" Hyattsvillc, Md., a suburb sub-urb of Washington. Mrs. Chalmers Hall of Salt Lake City was a guest at a smart bridge party last week at Hickory. N. C, near' Washington. Mrs. Ilnll has been tho honor guest at a number of entertainments enter-tainments since her arrival in Hick-orv. Hick-orv. At a bridge party last week she was the winner of one of the prizes. Ono of the prettiest and most popular popu-lar of the debutantes of this season is Miss Eliza McMullin of California. This voung lady is spending the winter with "her relatives. Mr. and Mrs. John Havs Hammond, who recently presented present-ed "their voung cousin to Washington society. a"t a very beautiful dance. Miss McMullin has gone to New York for an indefinite stay, but expects to return to Washington beforo going to her home in California. Captain Frederick Gocdecke. U. S. A., after a visit to friends in the cast, has left for Salt Lake City, whero he has been transferred. Professor B. C.
