Show I IN "NEW ENGLAND One City in Every State in Group Sees Systsin Inaugurated. BOSTON, Jan. 3. Postal savings banks were opened in one town in every New England state today, and while the volume of business transacted was not large. It is reported to have more than fulfilled the expectations of the local postal officials. Norwood, Mass.; Bristol, K. T.; Berlin, Ber-lin, N. IL; Humford, Me.; Montpelier, Vr., and Ansonia. Conn., were the towns chosen for t lie experiment iu New Eng-' Eng-' laud. At Norwood up to noon about twenty-five accounts, averaging $2 each, had been opened. The largest amount of business in Norwood is expected to be dono evenings. At Bristol the postal clerks were kept busy, The largest single deposit was $50. Several school children bought postal deposit stamps at 10 cents each, for tcu of which an account for $1 may be opened. Although but few residents of Berlin knew of the opening of the postal bank there, more than twenty accounts had been opened up to 4 o'clock. At Eum-ford, Eum-ford, a number of deposit accounts were opened and a large quantity of deposit stamps wcro sold to the school children. At Montpelier, Vt,, there were only n few depositors during the day, but the postmaster expressed tho belief that as soon as the people becamo familiar with the operations of tho postal bank, they would give it good patronage. |
