Show THEIR AWFUL HYPOCRISY. Tho Deserot News, on Wednesday evening, speaking of the sentiment in this city against 1 rise-fights, e-s: "But why should such a movement, if it materializes, as we pray and hope it wil! do, be confined tj prize-fighting!" And it enumerates certain other evils here which it jirofessas to hope will be done away with. And yet the seed and roof of those evils are to bo found right under its own nose, in tho towellings, towell-ings, doctrines, and practices, in tho "vil lives of the loaders of the Mormon Mor-mon church. As to prize-fighting, it is not so long ago. that tho church allowed a slugging match in its' Salt Lako Thcator, and Joseph P. Smith, with some of his sons, graced tho occasion with his presence. What Is the matter all :( once that the church organ raises a hypocritical yell abous prize-fighting'. There was not one word uttered by President Smith against tho prize-light which ho attended at-tended ir. tho church t lieu to-' in rhis city. There was not one word of denunciation de-nunciation in tho church organ of lhat prize-fight nor of Smlt i for al tending if. Wbit has come over the outfit' all at once, that its hypocrisy thus overflows? over-flows? The fact of it is. that the whole outcry of tho Nows at this ihuo ir simply for ulterior and political ends. It evidently wants to drive the prizefights prize-fights all out lo Saltair, where Iho church, and relatives of the president of tho church, can get the profits from the disgraceful affairs. With respect to the stockade, there aro no words strong enough lo describe the evils of such lives as arc lived there. And yet tho. lives lhat have .been lived in polygaiuist "families'' can scarcely bo said to bo prcfarred. The heart-break of women, tho driving of them insane, tho robbing of them of their substance, of their good name, the fixing of the. brand of shame upon Iheir offspring, aro all something that is just as harrowing as anything any-thing that can he fold of the stockade. ISvil, low, disgraceful as fchat stockade evidently is from tho detailed accounts that wc get of if from thoso familiar with the details as printed :n the organ of the church, (those accounts evidently evident-ly como from thoso who have- participated par-ticipated in the evils of tho stockade Iifo and know thoroughly what is done there), the polygamy horror can match it. The polygaiuist appetite is not easily satisfied. The attraction of such places to the ciders w.vj fully brought out in the investigations of tho stockado last year, to the astonishment of many who were loth to believe that elders of the Mormon church habitually hung around such places night after' night, and continued to do so for years. And yet tho testimony was plain and positive. Admissions w-jf2 made that left no room for doubt. This is a case where, aj in so many other cases, the slogan. "Roach the man higher up" could bc put into effect to. excellent pui pose. The slimy hypocrisy of all such crafty professions as the church organ habitually indulges in was startling! illustrated on Sundav night last, when President Joseph P. Smith, who, under oath, declared that he is living his life in defiance of the laws of Cod and man; who announced his dolibomlo purpose lo "lako his chances against the law"; and Elder Briuihnll, a scandalous; notorious, lecherous polygaiuist, polyg-aiuist, gravely lectured a lot of young men on tho text: "Bo Yo Clean." It is said that tho Roman augurs gave each other tho .smile- of conscious hvpocriHy .when they wore ongagod in their divinations. In like manner must President Smitli anil" Elder" U'rimh'a'll havo exchanged grins of gtiilo when thcy werp making tho exhibit of scandalous hypocrisy that they indulgod in on Sunday Sun-day night. Por as crafty, cunning, conscienceless, con-scienceless, and conscious hypocrites, thoy were on that occasion the chiefs. |
