WASHINGTON, June fi. Representatives Representa-tives of the railways oast of Chicago and north of tho Ohio river, at a conforence here today, decided that tho advanced freight rates would be filed as offcctlvo August 1. pending the enactment of tho railroad bill now in conference. If the bill should not bocomo a law by August 1, a further postponement will be granted. The agreement provides that tho railroads rail-roads shall file with tho commission supplementary sup-plementary tariffs in postponement of the tariffs which they filed last week. This arrangement la mado In compliance with the verbal agreement between the eastern east-ern railway presidents and President and to conform to tho provisions in the railroad rail-road bill that tho lntcrestate commerce commission shall havo authority to suspend sus-pend general rate advances, pending a determination by tho commission or their reasonableness. Tho conference was held between Chairman Knapp, Commissioner Clark and representatives of the llnc3 In eastern east-ern classification territory. Anxious for Action. Tho railway officials expressed a desire de-sire to expedite consideration of the rate increases. Whllo no agreement was made on he-half he-half of the commission. It was intimated tlint a final determination of the reasonableness reason-ableness of the rates necessarily would cousumo many months. It Is certain that tho commission will be unablo to begin actlvo consideration of tho advances before September, and It Is deemed probable that it will require the greater part of next fall and winter to pass upon all phases of them. The understanding is that, prior to the enactment of tho pending railroad bill, no additional freight rates will bo filed by tho eastern railroads. What they may do It Is Impossible to foresee, as they will be governed entirely by conditions as they arlso after August 1. |
