georgia during the year 1889 the negroes show a greater percentage of marriages to their num ben than the whites though the greater population of whites runs their aggregate above the marriages of either race increase in number according to their density of population that is in counties largely white there are more marriages per thousand than in counties where the other race predominates and the same ia true of the blacks A difference in favor of the country districts exists in matrimony among the negroes in the black belt and especially along the coast where they live upon fiah and the products of nature it would appear as if there wai not a 15 year old female unmarried inland lie marriages are not eo heavy hut the number keeps up surprisingly in alie turpentine counties where hundreds of negroes come from north carolina alie marriages would indicate the population had gone out of single bliss in north georgia which is the center of the white population the marriages grow in number but on a conservative basis the jues tion of increase in creaso naturally comes up in this connection while the greater number of negro marriages marri agea means more births yet the mortality among negro children is alarming and the percentage of white ce ildren who rach maturity is much greater atlanta leads the state in ile number of marriages to its population while savannah
