Show DECEMBER SKY two events one of which will be of popular and tho other of scientific interest occur this month the first is the arrival of the sun in its apparent journey around the earth at the extreme southerly point in its course and the other is the total solar eclipse the former place on tho twenty first day of the month and the latter on the twenty third for over five months past or since june the sun has been sweeping in a southerly direction rising culminating and setting farthur and farther lo 10 the southward Kout hward each day tho half cir cle traversed above the horizon gradually shortening walla the daylight hours have been steadily decreasing and the hours of darkness steadily increasing in duration on september the sun crossed tho line at the autumnal equinox and OB lashing around southerly its sol estial point or standing point it starts out on its half yearly journey to the northward at the timo when the sun roaches tho southern solstice the days all over the northerly half of alm globe are at their shortest and the nights at their longest and in tho southern half the opposite conditions prevail while the astronomical win tor in the north zono bogins the eclipse which takes place hii the of december will be the fifth and last of the year 1889 and tho third eclipse of the sun the two solar which already occurred took place respectively ou january ast 1st and july 28 while tholo oi the moon were on january ag and july 12 like that of tho opening day of the year the solar eclipse which takes place three weeks hence will be total but unlike the former it will not bo visible in the united states for a moment at abo extremity of cape Hat and at the keys of south florida it will bo seen in some or all of its phases iu the northern pert of south america and the greater portion of africa observations will chiefly bo made in the latter region nest year there will be only three eclipses two of the sun and one of the moon |
