Young, Jr. GOVERNOR SPRY TAKES PART IN THE PROGRAMME I Annual Statement Made by President Kingsbury: Prof. Coop's Song. Elaborate and impressive ceremony marked the graduating exorcises of tho fortieth annual commencement at 1 bo University of Utah Wednesday morning. morn-ing. Promptly at JO o'clock tho procession, pro-cession, headed by Hold's band, formed in front of the library building and marched to the gymnasium, whorp tho exercises were held. The order of march was as follows: Candidates for graduation from tho kindergarten department, de-partment, candidates for normal certificates, certifi-cates, candidates for certificates in two-3ear two-3ear law and modical courses, candidates candi-dates for degrees as bachelor of arts, candidates for degrees as bachelor or science in tho various engineering courses, followed by the members ot the alumni, faculty, invited guests and members of the hoard of regents. Tho candidates for degrees presented a very pleasing appearance in their black caps and gowns. In tho gymnasium a twenty-piece orchestra or-chestra and tho University girls' chorus, under tho direction of Professor Squire Coop, were in attendance, and furnished excellent music The Rev. D. M. Hel-' mick opened the exercises with prayer. George Calvin Ensign, representing the graduates from the normal school, rcac a paper, "Loyalty and the Classroom,' which was carefully prepared and well received. The next number was "Charity, sung by Miss Edith Grant, soloist, and the ladies' chorus. The valedictory address ad-dress by "Richard W. Young, Jr.. of the college graduates, followed. "The Reciprocal Re-ciprocal Relation Between the State University and Its Constituency'' w(as the title of Mr. Young's oration. Annual Statement. A pleasing number by the orchestra preceded the reading of the annual statement of conditions at the university univer-sity by President J. T. Kingsbury. President Pres-ident Kingsbuo concluded his remarks with a fittinc eulogy of the late Mrs. Rebecca E. Little, who was during her lifetime a student, alumnus and regent d the institution. Governor William Spry made the principal address to the graduates. He emphasized the fact that the graduates had much to bo grateful for in the op- portunities before them; that with a foundation of thoroughness underlying their future efforts they had every reason rea-son to succeed in life. Tn conclusion, ho said: "I'rom every corner of this broad land comes the summons for men of education and character; but nowhere no-where will the investment of your education edu-cation and energies pay higher dividends divi-dends than here in Utah. No section lends its combination of undeveloped resources and outside confidence moro invitingly to the energetic young man thnn our state. Exert your energies here at home; use those talents which this institution has developed in you, in t lie promotion of Utah's resources, and 1 promise that Utah will yield in abundance, abun-dance, prosperity, peace and happiness measured only by your individual ability abil-ity for appreciation. After the presentation of the degrees, and certificates, Miss Maudo May Bab-cock Bab-cock road the words of a new Utah Bonpr, "0 Sun of tho Youth of Utah," together with a letter from the author, Miss Kato Thomas. The choir accompanied accom-panied by the orchestra then sang tho song in effective manner. President Kingsbury announced the nominations for tho three fellowships in the engineering department for next year. The faculty committee recommends recom-mends the appointment of Theodore P. Holt, who has held the fellowship the past year for tho Wall research scholarship. schol-arship. The two other fellowships recently re-cently established, will probably go to Neils P. Christonsen, a graduate from tho miuiug department of tho university univer-sity in H)U5, and J. B. Adams, a graduate gradu-ate in electrical engineering .from the University of Texas, who comes here highly recommended. Principal Stewart of the normal school, Deaa Cummings of the school of arts and sciences, aud Dr.' .f. F. Merrill, Mer-rill, director of the state school of mines announced the recommendations for certificates cer-tificates and degrees in their respective departments, and President Kingsbury made the official presentation as the graduates marched upon the rostrum to the accompaniment of the band.
