Show CUMULATIVE PEOOF. ' On-the morning after the dAfeit of the eapitol proposition. The Tribunc stated that the main cause ofltjlic deJ feat was resentment of the pe nle at tha high-handed, corrupt, and disgraceful disgrace-ful tactics of the "Federal bnncni,'' in its political moves and trickeries. The Bescrot News, in its editorial the evening after election, practically confessed con-fessed the same thing. And now the Herald, while editorially trying lo fight off the proposition, supports Tho Tribune's Trib-une's proposition emphatically in its news reports. Yesterday morning, for instance, its correspondence quoted a voter in TCuj'svillc, (which voted 25 no to 33 yes on the Slate eapitol proposition.) prop-osition.) as saying: The first duty of the cillzons of this Statr.- is to wrest the control from the nfrleo-holdlng politicians who now have State matters in charge. And that,wc are more lhan ever convinced, con-vinced, was the feeling that permeated the State, and that made the opposition opposi-tion to Ihc eapitol so general in. the election districts. Jt was, in fact, the real cause of tho one-sided vote in Weber county, although, conjointly, the locality war made in Ogden had a strong effect in I he. same direction. Though, without the .dissatisfacl ion lo-wards lo-wards the '" Federal bunch," no such voto as that could have been had against the proposition in Ogden and Weber county. We are convinced' that the people of this Slate aro well disposed towards the building of a Stat" eapitol. It is good economy to build it. Jt would pay the State to have a good eapitol building build-ing (or its business headquarters, on Ihc money side of tho question alone; then, after this, tho consideration of the State's public affairs should have some effect on the construction of tho Stnto eapitol, tho convenience of access to all of the records, the safely from destruction by firo or otherwise of the State archives these considerations in favor of f lie eapitol aro overwhelming While, as actual argument, thero is absolutely nothing against it, except only tho reluclauce of tho taxpayers to increase the burdens which thoy an now obliged lo carry. The increase for this purpose, however, would bo sc small that we do not believe the taxpayers tax-payers of this State would allow it l stand in tho way of arguments and considerations that so powerfully point to the need of Slate eapitol, and the economy of building it, were that the fule question at issue. With Slato poli tics in cleaner and in better hands, there need be no fear at some favorable time in the near future of submitting again a proposition like this lo tho people, with absolute certainty of having hav-ing it ratified by a largo majority of tho taxpayers of this 'State. |
