Show STAKE conference A great many are in attendance in provo SOME GOOD instructions george Q cannon and apostle francis M lyman instruct the latter da saints the quarterly conference of alie utah stake ot zion was commenced on sunday morning at 10 at the meet house there were present on the stand president geo Q cannon apostle F M lyman seymour B young of the presidency of seventies and A 0 smoot david john and II 11 H cauff of the stake presidency too choir sang lord we come before thee now at thy leei we humbly bow prayer was offered by bishop E D ayans the choir sang on the mountains lio I 1 the sacred herald s APOSTLE F M LYMAN was the first speaker ep eaker he was pleased to see so many of the saints together but he was sorry that the stake tabernacle could not be BO warmed that all liht attend we are greatly blessed in zion with peace and prosperity ersty for which we cannot be too great ful the lord has had his band over this people all things that surround ua seem to he favorable 10 llie latter day saints our trials have not been serious anil tho lord lias prepared a way for us tu do hiis will aud build up uis church I 1 be leive that the spirit of the lord lias established in alio hearts of the latter day saints so firm a knowledge of the truth that they will endure faithfully unto the end although we seem to make progress slowly I 1 the gospel has told in the breasts cf the people thai it is becoming a second nature I 1 believe it has a effect upon their posterity I 1 believe the children are burn latter day saints I 1 believe they naturally have this planted in their hearts I 1 think in my close examination and in my acquaintance with families I 1 can discover a change from infidelity to fidelity the lord has wrought marvelously with the people I 1 can discover and doubt you can that the latter day saints are becoming a marked boole in the earth I 1 think I 1 can discover the change in myself in my with whom I 1 associate 1 think ican discover quite a noticeable change in the hearts of the people they are willing to yield and receive reproof in early times they would perhaps have broken away from ilie laith they are w illing to suffer wrong rather than to do wrong I 1 take notice oft liese things and weigh them and con ader them in my travels among the people I 1 discover among all classes of people that the Latter Gay saints are be comine well fixed in the gospel and their children are willing to be taught a knowledge of the truth they are an to lall into line there seems to be planted in their hearts a natural de aire to become acquainted with a knowledge of the truth the printed matter that we have in our various young peoples associations all tend to plant in the hearts of the children a knowledge of the gospel ills only a commencement men cement and yet I 1 can discover the good that is resulting from this these young people will grow up in greater power the opposition met with from time to time only tends to strengthen and purify us and our posterity a it gives me confidence in god and it gives me confidence in men and women when lean discover this improvement it gevea me hope that the lord will be pleased with us I 1 presume that all parents feel the same anxiety for their children that the lord feels for us according to the light possessed by the parents we are anxious for the salvation of our children and families and this anxiety extends with god to the whole human family wo cannot do better as latter day saints to secure this salvation for our children than by setting a good example the heads of families the bishops of wards and the presidents of stakes should set an example that is worthy to be followed if we believe in the worship of god on alie sabbath day let the latter da saints emphasize that doctrine by a close attendance to their religious duties on the sabbath day As we have faith in alic doctrin of tithing the latter day saints should emphasize that doctrine we should feel thai if we pay our tithes a blessing will come to us individually be it keown that the lord has never revealed any law peculiar blessings for the salvation and happi ness of mankind not only are we satisfied that the law of tithing is a just and proper law but we should bo sat isfried that we will receive blessings tho observance of that law with all the fidelity expressed by the latter day saints on this day it ia not sufficient to excuse us from an ob servance of the law of tithing of attending to our religious ou the sabbath day of obeying the word of and of keeping the other commandments of god god lias made of us one people and it is not by the cunning and wisdom of man that we are held but it is by the power of god tle blessings bles aings of the lord show in us and they ought to become more peculiar we should be so firm that we could hardly turn away from the truth we should be so that only the most serious sins that we might fall into could drive us from the truth men whose feitli in a principle prid ciple is weak are in danger there is doubt and where there is doubt there is danger we believe among other things that we should be merciful if we would we must exercise mere we must be merciful to thoe alio na d then let us extend mercy ty who need mercy rt our hands let it be known to the world that the latter day sainta are the most merciful people in the world we speak of these abingd because there is room for the very best among us to improve my bretherd br ethern and bisters let ua emphasize the observances of alic principles of the latter day saints eliat it may be said that u e are conscientious let us make improvements while we can it is only for a short time that we have to labor the world is laboring for the things of this life but we are laboring for the riches of eternity aa well as the pleasures of this life SEYMOUR B I 1 accept the invitation vi to stand before yon tor a few moments with gratitude to our heavenly father it would be a matter I 1 could not explain why the latter day saints should not increase in purity should not bo better we are constantly permitted to biear auh teaching as we have heard this morning when men as brother lyman are constantly teaching the people I 1 was reading this morning some facts about the cities of this country and especially ally of denver where it had been enacted that liquor should not be sold on sunday but ic seems that liquor men have euch a power there that saloons could not ba closed on tho sabbath I 1 find the people are calling on the clergy inthe city of denver to help close this traffic they have stated dewever he wever that they are to help this because they have to teach such things as please the from whom they get their salaries it appears eliat these ministers have forgotten their mission mie sion it seeing that if they had the power of upon them they could raise their voices fearlessly against the evils ot the day this is what is expected of a minister of the gospel what can we gay if preachers pi eachers are asked to teach th e gospel of life and ali ey say I 1 dare not my living is at stake you know that jebus said that as with the teachers so with the people there are probably a few minister sonly a few who dare proclaim pro clain against these evils it is the hearing of the principles of life that has brought to these mountains a people of god and welded together freed from the evil of the our teachings from the very demand purity a repentance from sin there are but two powers extant upon the earth the one enticing to do good the other to do evil the free agency is given to man and he can choso which ho will all classes of people are invited to call upon god and do his will by his servants living upon the earth today when any city or a government through their officers state their inability to remedy any eail there is a need for reform but what gives me joy is that the servants of god fave no fears in raising their voice against evil it has been proclaimed that liberals are the ones to build up this country I 1 want to show you a few examples the liberals have salt lake and ogden at first the officers said that the saloons should be closed on the sabbath day now they admit their inability to do so no latter day saint has the richt to sell intoxicating drink hence this shows which is the party of progress I 1 hope the day will speedily come that not a latter day saints can be found alio ever tastes liquor the choir sung an anthem 0 farther almighty power benediction by president jocob gates servillia SERVI Clia after the usual opening exercises president george Q cannon addressed the congregation when we come together aa we now do it is the privilege of each to experience that comfort and strength which may be required if we come with the proper spirit we will receive that strength and food which our spiritual nature requires I 1 suppose every man in this audience who has preached the gospel knows that a great deal depends on the congregation he has frequently spoken those things that he had not before thought of some one in the congregation required that instruction st I 1 was this morning reminded of the figure of boring for water you go a certain depth and get a small stream of water if you keep on boring you will gradually get a larger stream so it is with the gospel the more we bore for the truths of the gospel the larger a stream we will get the path of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints is a path of progress we can always continue to advance it is not EO with ether churches you arrive at a certain point and you can go no further the path of the gospel is the path that the angels trod it is the rath the savior trod it is the path god alrod if we continue in this path we will eventually arrive where they aie we can congratulate ourselves that in theae latter days the authority tho rity haa been sent down from god by which we can reach the place where these personages are the most of us here have had the privilege of entering upon the path our forefathers did not have this privilege it is our province to be their saviors to a certain extent many people in their mistaken zeal have supposed that if a man did not secure salvation in this life he could receive it and therefore the idea has become fixed in many minds that after a man left this existence nothing could be done for him in our day god has shown us differently man lives here for a short space but that is not the end this gospel is a gospel of glad tidings it comforts us for our dead most of us who leave joined the church have biad some friends who have gone behind the veil without receiving the gospel we would feel very verv miserable if t e thought there was no lope for these friends who had gone before the old tradition was that there were only two places after this life one of happiness and glory and the other one of infinite torment it has thus happened that the minds of the living have been filled with fear in relation to their friends who have passed away but the gospel gives us a brighter prospect every person will be rewarded according to the deeds dona tn the body we are told that there is repentance for every sin unless it is the sin against the holy ghost god holds out his arms of mercy to all sin nars repentance is one of the dounda tion stones of the gospel the spirits of the wicked ones who havo heard the gopel and have not listened will go to prison where their wicked deeds will brought before them the righteous will go to the paradise of god where they will mingle with kindred spirits the day wil come when messengers of salvation will be sent to the spirits in prison and they will have a chance to repent of their sins when they believe in jesus and repent of their sins then this work which you have done for them in the temples of god will be of avail salvation Kal will come to them then but not until then so amount of baptism for them will avail unless they have faith in jesus and repent of their sins ane gospel of salvation also comes freighted and laden with blessings for us and our posterity I 1 believe that our children who are born in the covenant will leave a claim upon the blessings of god that neither our ancestors nor we can claim even though they be wayward the lord will not forget the children of his chosen people I 1 apel to say to the saints if you have way hayvard vard children be patient with them I 1 do not mean for you to condone with them in their sins but do not drive them from you if your prayers are constantly offered up in their behalf the day will come when your prayers will be heard they may pass through hell but god will eventually remember them he will not forget your sufferings for the gospel my brethren and sisters yon see the difference between our condition and the condition of those who have not received the gospel god will have mercy on us and will give us great power PRESIDENT A 0 SMOOT had been pleased to witness the attention of this large audience during services and on the other hand lie regretted that so many had been compelled to go away without get giua in ve will look for better thines in the future and hope soon to see the time when we can meet in the taber nacle I 1 wish that I 1 could be able to say to this audience in my report of this stake of zion that there were no drunkards and none who desired to take ad vantage of their neighbors or break the other commandments of god in aliis stake I 1 was told the other day that provo city derived a year from the whisky trade now I 1 do not believe there are enough outsiders in to support the saloons that pay this revenue consequently some of the elders in israel must be helping them ve have in our midst some of the best people on earth and on the other hand we leave pome of the most wicked people on earth we have the two extremes in relation to this stake of zion I 1 will say that peace generally prevails of course there ara some disputes and misunderstandings but as a rule they are settled before they reach the high council there cri very few appealed camps we have ben abundantly blessed with our crops our flocks and our herds this year and I 1 believe the tithing received from chis stake of zion will be greatly inex cesa of that of last year if it does not there is certainly something wrong the choir ean an anthem hallelujah benediction was president david john |
