Show A PLUCKY MAN IN A FIRE carrying his wife aud child down a blazing staircase chicago january 16 the family of joseph horner a well known merchant had a narrow escape from burning with theu michigan avenue house this morning shortly after midnight mid night the woodwork about the overheated furnace caught fire mrs Homer awoke with a stifling sensation she tried to open her eyes and they filled with smoke she seized her husband and shook him violently mr homer bounding out of bed cried to his wife to put on some clothes and snatching up the little girl who was with smoke rushed into the hallway the flames and smoke were sweeping up the stairway ite groped his way to a front room seized a couple of wraps from a chair threw one about the child and the other over his cifes shoulders by this time the stairway was on fire and escape seemed cut off seizing his wife around the waist with one arm and the child with the other mr homer half staggered half fell down the stairs he pushed through the smoke and with a last effort threw open tho front door and rushed into the et hamer then started back into his house to save the two servants asleep on the top floor A thick and steady volume of smoke now poured aut of the open front door and fighting through this mr Homer encountered a sheet of flame at the foot of the stairs it scorched his face and singed his hair but he flow up the blazing stairway to the top floor and burst into the servants room were asleep and nearly suffocated ho reached thorn throwing a few wraps about each of them be seized an arm of each and started downstairs the flames had eaten their way through the stairs by this time and as h stepped upon them they seemed to drop from under him and when he reached the street the night dresses of the servants were on fire after the rescues homer gave an alarm and the flames were put out with a loss of S |
