doubt ita complete acceptance by the county democracy some of its pro visions being in our opinion utterly superfluous aud at variance with genuine democratic doctrine we may have something to say on the subject hereafter we believe it the duty of every citizen of a free government to understand its principles and to interest himself in its administration that the moat efficient action in aliis direction can be had by identifying ones self with an organized political party atiat the principles of hie democratic party have been most conducive to the establishment and preservation of our free institutions in me pat and if adhered to in the future will secure their stability and aid their growth we recognize the following aa acme of the more essential principles of said party to the maintenance of and propagation of which we as bals ana as a chuu 1 au inviolable preservation of the federal constitution aud this we understand to include the preservation to the salutes and to the people of all rights and powers of government not expressly or uy necessary imputation granted to the federal government 2 to foster a spirit of independence so that the citizen shall rely for his prosperity upon liis own industry energy and economy rather alian the special aid or protection of government which is always unequal and often un juat 3 that adjustment of a tariff for revenue in a spirit of equity which shall as litile as possible injure either of the great hite reata of agriculture manufacture and commerce and shall not build up the cue upon the ruins of the othera that under no predence pretence pre tence should be collected from the people more revenue than is necessary for an economical administration of the government economy in the public expense that labor may be lightly burdened 4 the enforcement of all valid laws and upon the question of the validity ot any law the decision of the court of las t resort is final and should be accepted in good faith until by legitimate agitation if obnoxious or unjust its abrogation or repeal can be secured equal aau exact justice to all men of whatever braie religious or political freedom of religion of the press and of the person under the protection of the law and of an enlightened public opinion absolute separation of church and state the safety and well being of each demanding that neither in ita organized capacity should iu any manner interfere inter lere with alie other B lievin that the true spirit of our free institutions and the powers reserved 10 the states and to alie people were wisely intended to and justly do secure to all american citizens the right of local self government we recognize that lor the purpose of exercising that right and performing that duty every citizen ought to be independent eliat ne wil at all times exercise his own best individual judgment in performing perform ini all af hia political privileges and dudes and we further declare it to be our firm belief that it is diametrically opposed to the principles plas of free government for any citizen to yield to any man or set of menthe right to control his political action and atiat in doing so he does an injustice to himself to his coun try and to civilization and while we insist upon the right to enjoy the benefits of local self government we be lieve it to be impossible that aliis right can be well
