american fork alfred dunkley W D dobinson Eo binson ana J J mercer lehi george webb D J thurman and samuel taylor Spring villo john S boyer and 1 I E anderson salom coas L olsen provo bench T J patten respectfully D J SAMUEL TAYLOR jos T moewaa the chair called attention to the fact that provo was not represented mr mcewan explained that there were no credentials presented from any provo delegation and all that the committee could do under the circumstances cum stances was to report the delegations as they found them W C A stated that there being secretaries and ono was expecting evidently that the other would attend to such and such duties is devolved upon the secretary he thought that one or tho other should i resign the chair stated thai ha was authorized zed to verbally present the resignation of secretary V xi halliday tho resignation was on motion accepted after some discussion tho committee on were authorized to add to the report the names of the provo delegation mr W C A smoot jr stated that a short time before the convention assembled a few provo demo demoi i brats met and deeded on the follow ing persons hiie representatives oi provo arp c at this convention W X DUSOL ry J T mcewan W D ebberts Eo berts as dunn and W K pike ith W 0 A ank S R thurman as alternates the committee on credentials again retired to amend their report they returned in a few minutes and reported having added tho names mentioned by mr smoot to their report the report of the committee was then adopted mr roberts moved that the temporary organization of the convention bt made permanent the motion prevailed the chairman stated the object of the call reading the notice as published in THE ENQUIRER S 11 thurman moved that th platform of principles recommended for adoption by the central cornitt et bo now read carried mr roberts moved that the con mention proceed to consider the plat ionn by sections the secretary then read each section mr bayor moved to adopt section one carried mr kobertz Ko berts moved to adopt section two carried mr webb moved to adopt three carried t action four called forth considerable discussion mr mcewan moved that section four be passed upon b sentences mr boyer moved to adopt section four the mcewan motion was then pat and carried the first sentence was read as fol follows the enforcement of all valid laws and upon the question of the validity of any law the decision of the court of last resort is final and should be accepted in good faith until by legitimate agitation if obnoxious or unjust its abrogation or repeal can be secured mr thurman moved its adoption mr mcewan moved as an amendment that all after all valid laws bo stricken out mr boyer moved as another amendment that the words after in good faith be stricken out mr mcewan considered it unnecessary and ill advised to pledge ourselves to attempt to remedy something that does not exist ho denied as a citizen and a democrat that lie bad resisted the enforcement of all valid laws or questioned the validity of any good constitutional law mr boyer favored the retention of the sentence een tence ho thought it the duty of the citizen to abide all laws passed by the legislature in good faith so long as they were declared constitutional by the highest tribunal mr thurman thought the sentence should stand as it was ho could not agree with either of the two speakers he contended foi the right to uso agitation against obnoxious laws until they abrogated or repealed he would accept ff obnoxious laws in good faith after being made valid by the supreme bourt until he could secure their repeal the sentence is good democratic doctrine A law that is unconstitutional is not valid and has no force it is absolutely void it is only after the supreme court has sustained laws that they should be accepted in good faith then it is the right of the citizen to work by legitimate agitation for their repeal air bayors amendment was put and lost mr mcevans Mc Ewans amendment was then put and lost also the original motion was put and carried and the sentence was declared adopted on motion a recess was taken for one hour at p m consideration of the platform was resumed the faccone and third sentences of section conr were adopted the fourth sentence was then discussed and adopted as follows foj lows absolute separation of church and state the safety and well being ol 01 each demanding that neither in its organized capacity should in any i manner interfere with the other the fifth sentence was then taken up dr pike moved for its adoption and J T mcewan moved as an amendment to strike it out it is aa follows fol lowb and while the state should not interfere with the individual in his lawful relations and duties to the church neither should the church aa such assume in any manner to control or direct the individual in his political duties to the state there was quite a lively discussion over this dr pike judge V N dusenberry jas dunn J S boyer vigorously contending for its adoption while W 0 A smoot T J patten W D ebberts Eo berts CL olsen J T mcewan david thurman and geo I 1 webb as vigorously opposing it on the ground that the sentence was super in view of the fact that the preceding sentence sufficiently con keyed the principle involved speakers advocating the sentence wanted it in because the majority here had been accused of uniting church and state Mr Webb in answering observed that the majority had also been accused oi murders horse stealing etc then why not put ourselves on record by denying also in the platform that we were guilty of these of fences wo had also been charged with belief in polygamy why not also incorporate something about that accusation in cho platform the motion was put resulting in 7 in favor of striking out and 5 in favor of its adoption tho sixth sentence was read and lop toti the seventh sentence was then read and created considerable discussion the sentence reads and we further declare it to be our firm belief that it is diametrically opposed to the principles of free government for any citizen to yield 10 any man or set of men the right to control his political action and that in doing so ho does an injustice to himself to his country and to civilia aaion the sentence was finally adopted the last sentence in bention four was then taken up as follows and while we strongly insist upon ahe right to enjoy the benefits of local self government we believe it to be impossible that this right can be well exercised or these benefits fully enjoyed by any community where the many are controlled by the will of the few mr D J thurman moved that the words whether that few be of the lo called liberal or peoples or any party whatsoever be added S ll 11 thurman supported the amendment imen dment be wanted this plat term 0 o reach all kinds of democrats whether they be of one party or another he every aman to plainly show chero ho stood he want a man to pose as a democratic today to day and a mem bember of mother party tomorrow to morrow dr pike objected to the amendment on the same ground that sentence five was stricken out the amendment was lost by 8 to 6 S E thurman moved that the words to whatever party that few may belong lie added this amendment carried A section 5 was read and adopted sixth seventh and eight were then read and adopted S K thurman moved that the words opposition thereto follow fidelity on first line section 9 the motion carried the second sentence of section 9 was read mr olsen moved that it bo stricken jut the motion was lost and the en adopted mr ebberts moved that after the word belief first line of section 9 ahe words fidelity to a church be added carrica the section was then on motion ad adopted tenth and last section was read and adopted on motion of mr boyer the plat lonn as passed upon by sections was adopted dr piko moved thai tho chairman direct the secretary to have copies of the platform printed and circulated among tho precincts the motion prevailed mr thurman moved that tho convention proceed to consider the advisability vis ability of nominating candidates for the county offices carried mr thurman was opposed to nominating a ticket we are now organized and wo have a platform an election at thi timo would only show are let awhile arid disseminate our principles W D roberts was in favor of putting a ticket in the field if thero were not ten votes polled S taylor was in favor of voting the democratic ticket if there was a shadow of a chance to elect one there was no chance however and he thought we should wait tadge dusenberry was interesting himself in the organization of a democratic club riot so much to elect or nominate a ticket but to effect a good permanent and respectable tion we shall not bo able to a very respectable showing even next november if we dont work more energetically tha we have done in the past mr boyer said when he went back to springville Spring ville and was asked if we had nominated a ticket he would feel like hanging his head he was in favor of making up a ticket now 1 was tho time to beam W C A smoot felt like going ahead and showing the young democracy that we mean business us show that this movement is not a farce the chairman arose and sr he was saro we were all right and should go ahead each man should consider himself a committee of one and work with his friends it was high time we were in earnest if we were not in earnest let us abandon the movement this movement may appear contemptible in the eyes of some people but in his eyes it was important he was heart and soul in this movement and tho platform expressed his feelings and views exactly if we go about talking up the policy of the thing instead of the principle of the thing nothing will be accomplished shed mr olsen believed in going slow wo ought to creep first and learn to valk he opposed putting candidates in the field sir anderaon And ereon took the and thought if we worked between bow and the fall we might be better able to put a ticket up S K thurman thought that those who talked so much about being true to this movement and that in order to prove they are true they must put a ticket in the field are men who would nip this movement in the bud he went on to give his reasons in a logical manner for opposing such a step here were a dozen or BO together assuming to act for the people there are only two or three precincts represented here would if be proper to assume to act for them in so important a matter as nominating candidates he himself the gall to do it why not call a meeting a fuller representation before adopting a ticket dusenberry Dusen Kerry believed in diplomacy He wanted ito Jee this he want to see a few democrats going about with paper hats and tin whistles there was a mission to fal ful we have to educate recruits ia the principles of democracy get a corresponding secretary invite correspondence pon dence with the national clubs and secure all the information we can mr patter thought enough to fill the offices to be elected for next august and thought the organization should wait awhile dr pike thought it would be poor policy to make the attempt to get up a ticket there was not timo enough only two weeks still if it was the sense of the meeting to go ahead he would offer no resistance mr boyer arose and stated after hearing what had been said he was not so enthusiastic in the matter of making up a ticked after further discussion it was finally agreed that consideration of tho question of nominating a ticket be for the present postponed the convention then adjourned |
