Show A ESCAPE A wagon smashed aby a express FATHER SEVERELY TO THE groad and sustains serious injuries to his head and back on sunday morning an accident occurred on centre street at the D E Q W crossing that reflects the greatest negligence on that railroad as anything that could possibly have happened A few minutes alter eleven on the morning in question lather knudsen who lives about a mile west of the D R G W crossing had occasion to come to town for which purpose bis hired man batched bitched up tha team and the two started anis way the young man was driving and used exceeding care in nearing thi track as he had been several times cautioned about athe danger of crossing the railroad for some time before reaching the crossing until they camo to the track he listened for any sign that might be given of the approach of the train As everything seemed still and no blew or bell rang the young man concluded all was right and continued his journey just as the horses touched the track imagine the surprise of the occupants of the wagon to see the D R G W express from ogden came thundering round the bend when the engineer saw the horses on the rails at a distance of not more than fifty yards he opened the throttle of the engine and whistled but he had neglected his duty too long the teamster as soon as besaw the danger let the lines fall on the horaces hacks and plied his whip vigorously the horses being frisky fortunately managed to jump the track hut there was not time for the wagon to clear itself of the danger tho hind part of which was by the engine with such a force as to throw both men out father knudsen was thrown about ten feet in the air falling on his head and shoulders and injuries from the et ferta of which he ia now bedridden the young man held to the licis for a few seconds after the collision but the team started on the run and ho let them go the hind end of the wagon was knocked into splinters by the engine and when the team was found all that was attached to it was the tongue and axle androne of the front wheels other parts of tho vehicle were scattered for the distance of a mile one of the tiers off one of the hind wheels was smashed into fragments by the force of the collision the train stopped as soon as it possibly could after the accident there are innumerable complaints about the almost everyday occurrence of trains passing at this point without giving any signal of their approach narrow escapes have already happened in consequence and it would surprise no one to hear of a fatality oc cimring if fhe rules of the railroad are not more stringently observed llight at this season above any other time in the year is this crossing extremely dangerous vehicles of every kind loaded with people pass this point every day and every night on their way to the several bathing resorts on utah lake and the utmost caution should b used by the engineers on both lines to give due warning on the approach of train not only by a long continued whistle but by the ringing of the bell as well unless this is done human life will be constantly in danger |
