Show B Y ACADEMY the flattering prospects for the fourteenth academic year the circular of Brigham the young academy for the academic 90 is full of interesting matter of benefit to the parents of the community at no time in the history of the academy has the prospects appeared more flattering than at the present this fact is well expressed in the following excerpt from the circular the work of the brigham young academy during the thirteen years of its existence is now a matter of record and nothing that the board of trustees or the faculty may say can change the impression of the people concerning it with a beginning of twenty nine students and one teacher without any available endowments with a mission before it requiring sound business qualifications on the part of the board of trustees a wide range of ability on the part of the faculty a upon tha patronage of the people and above all an unfaltering faith in the support and approbation of israels god the academy has steadily pursued its course overcoming obstacles increasing in strength and extending its influence far beyond the borders of our territory many difficulties are yet to be conquered many vicissitudes perhaps yet to be passed through but with a faith triumphant oer our fears we appeal to every latter day saint who has the welfare of the rising generation at heart to use his luene among the youth of zion that the classrooms class rooms of the academy may be filled to their utmost capacity during the coming academic year one main feature of this institution is its theological organization students are graded according to age degree of the priesthood held and previous training in theology thus it happens that students oj the preparatory or intermediate grade are often to the academic class in theology and vice versa following is a brief outline of the work done in each department primary simple stories from the bible the book of mormon and church history preparatory life of acts of the apostles and book of mor intermediate the prophets selections from doctrine and covenants book of mormon and epistles of new testament academic A systematic and somewhat exhaustive study of the principles and ordinances of the gospel as arranged in the compendium alternating with church history and book of mormon chronology students should bo supplied with the standard works of the church besides daily recitations on the above subjects devotional exercises are held gand evening A general repetition class is held mondays and the students stu denta divided into small quorums to review the past weeks work in theology A priesthood meeting convenes tuesdays to hear the repetition reports and to acquaint the members more fully with the duties and organization of the priesthood A general theological class is held wednesdays in which all departments participate and interesting programmed pro grammes are rendered A missionary meeting is held on the sabbath day at which the students engage in singing testimony prayer and the special study of the duties of missionaries is open to of both sexes and offers facilities in all the branches of a common english education as well as in higher studies of language mathematics and science A special feature is the formal students for the teachers calling applicants will be welcomed at any time but it is strongly urged that they enter if possible at the beginning of an academic year or at least at the beginning of a term students on entering will be assigned after a preliminary examination to the department to which they are best adapted by previous training and the special object of their studies the academy boing the recognized normal college of the church school organization its course of normal training has been reorganized to meet the wants of the church school service the complete course covers two academic years and comprises a senior and junior class the curriculum of the junior class embraces instruction and drill in the regular branches of schoolwork school work that of the senior class includes instructions on organization and management of schools general principles of education and practical class work students of the junior class can enter the senior class only after satisfactory evidence ovi dence of efficiency Ten students eligible for the senior class will be selected in the most judicious manner possible as beneficiaries under the Church appropriation the normal students receive daily regarding methods of teaching rules of discipline catechization drawing up ot daily pro plans of studies for schools grading and hundling oi textbook text book and keeping records in older to offer former graduates an opportunity of preparing for leading positions in the educational profession fes sion a post graduating class has been organized the members of which will be required to make a specialty of the literary the mathematical ma or the scientific courses and to gain thorough theoretical and practical acquaintance with all the principles of the science of didactics |
