This doos not Include In-clude the city's part of public Improvements not yet contracted for. The committee on estimates and apportionments finished the budget, containing a statement- of the estimates of expenditures and rovenues for 1000, Wednesday and probably -will send It to tho city council, assembled In special session this evening, for approval. G50.000.00 Total .Sl.205.8S4.-tO No public Improvements other than those under contract tho first of the year were provided for In the budget for the reason that an effort will be made to get the legislature to pass a law taxing the entire coat of nil public work to the benefited bene-fited property owner. Conncllmen Hall and Fernstrom aro now working with City Attorney Dininny upon a bill to this effect, which will bo presented to tho legislature legisla-ture as soon as finished. If the bill passes it Is posslblo that no appropriation will have to be made to cover the city's part of public work contracted tor after the first of the current year. If the bill does not become n law tho council will have to mako this appropriation iinmcdlotcly, as SI, 500.000 worth of public Improvements aro contemplated this year, of which the city will have to stand its part under tho presont law. approximately $200,000. The budget shows that the tax levy, 1" mills, probably will not have to be molested. mo-lested. The committee bused tho estimate of a rovonue of $t5i).O0O from taxation on an assessed valuation of 350,000,000 for Salt Iake Cltv in 1000. The assessed valuation of tho taxable property In the city will not bo known, however, until about July 1, at which time tho county assessor will furnish the figures. Tho tax rate for the- year will then be adjusted. The city finished tho yoar 1008 almost $200,000 better oft! than 1007. Almost one-half, one-half, or $86,326.67, of this saving was made In the departmental, expenses. The appropriation for departmental expenses for 1008 was 3750,772.45, tho expenditures wcro $C04.:;26.G7. Only seven departments execoded their respective appropriations and this by only a few hundred dollars. Tho rest kept well within the appropriation.
