Show THE CITY OP ofle DEAD A visit to alie city cemetery with the committee by invitation of the city council committee on cemetery the man accompanied jos T mcewan C A glazier and evan the gentlemen comprising that committee to the city graveyard baat saturday afternoon and secured a few points that may possibly he of general public in oue of the first things that attracted our attention on entering the gates was thac great improvement made by the removing of the sagebrush that formerly laid from view the resting places of the dead there is yet considerable more to be pulled up and we understand that on saturday the mayor intends making another call upon the citizens for this purpose when this is done and the sage brush removed then trees should be set out on each side of the main walk about two hundred trees would be required for this purpose and if possible the city should at once arrange for this quantity and lose no time in having them set out the earlier this spring tho better this would complete the avenue of trees from the gates to the west side of the cemetery and coulp lend a very view from all points considerable and irreparable damage has resulted to the southeastern portion of the cemetery from the seepage and overflow ing of water from the ditch on the north side of beesleys Bee land adjoining not only has it caused the growth of weeds and consequent covering up of the graves in that portion but it has also caused a sinking of the graves and there are some that never will be found from surface observations in consequence this is a damage that never can be repaired and it is to be deplored that it ever happened before irrigation bets in and in fact at once if at all poss bile adrain ditch should be made on the south line of the cemetery and a further repetition of this over cloning and seepage avoided before any more lots are sold in the southwest or northwest portions of the graveyard the land in these two places should he scraped down and the dirt emptied into the extreme comers this would create new burial lots and the means from the sale of them would amply compensate for the scraping besides being a most decided improvement there is another matter that should be attended to also that would not take much time while the scrapers were on the ground and that is the removing of the banks from the east ditch not only is the present condition of the ditch un but there are one or two graves almost covered ith the dirt that is thrown from the bed of the ditch when it is cleaned out wo understand that the city have purchased lumber with which to build bridges on the street on the north side of the cemetery that leads to the depot this being so and the sexton agreeing to put them down we trust the street will be opened as it will be very convenient veni ent in many ways the retirement of the present committee on cemetery at a time when so much needed and valuable improvement was being made is to be regretted and cannot help but have its effect the gentlemen have made their labor a study and aro to be congratulated for the pleasing condition of the cemetery and the great improvements made during I 1 their administration sir cluff the sexton is also deserving of praise for tho cleanly and tidy condition of the grounds another two years of such commendable work achas been done in the past similar period will make tho attractive and pleasant and a place that provo city will be proud of |
