Show SILK CULTURE the legislative body petitioned for financial help in the matter father graves chairman of the coin mitte on silk industry of the central board of trade lias favored us with the following copy of a communication he has written to governor west soliciting aid in tha raising of silk and which communication muni cation has been referred to the legislature by the governor tv his excellency the governor andiron members of of utah territory I 1 wish to bring to your notice one of the greatest industries of our rural population ula tion viz the silk industry which might be established amongst this people alio have advocated it foe some years and which industry it is well known by being brought to a successful issue would bethe means of bringing thousands of dollars to this territory annually hundreds ot dollars have been subscribed by the ladies of this county tor the purchasing of cocoons raised in this and surrounding counties a weaver has been emigrated and hand reels booms and hand machinay mac hinTy for the industry nave been purchased by the utah county silk association which up to the present time have been a certain success but the silk industry at present is almost at a stand still so far as the bilk raised in this territory is concerned there being no market for the cocoons after being raised on account of the lack of suitable machinery with which to prepare the raw silk for the loom the united states have in various parts given bounties and made ap times and places to promote tha great industry in amounts aggregating from two to three hundred million dollars yet the united states are and have been importing raw silk from france italy china and other eastern countries to the amount of from twenty to thirty five million dollars annually thereby paying said amount to the peasants of foreign countries when it should have been kept and paid to our own peasantry in the rural districts of fhe territories and states suitable for the culture of silk I 1 recently received a circular and letter from a company iu france soliciting my operation cooperation co in this important matter the circular plainly shows the ad vantages both to the agriculturist and the general public that will accrue from the raising ot silk in this country what is wanted to make alie industry a success not only in this territory but in other silk growing districts in the united states is a filature that isa reel for drawing off silk from coc oona the writer of the communication before mentioned is the sole patentee of the famous serrell automatic invented bv air ed W serrell jr patented in trance by him sir is a youn american and has with the company devoted the last ten years to the construction and improving of the automatic reel it is alie intention to petition your honorable body for an api to purchase one of these reels as soon as an answer can be ob tamed stating the price etc alie old style of reeling by hand is too slow a process to make any great success in silk culture there is some machinery which was purchased with an appropriation made during the administration of governor emery which cost 1500 and which was intended to be used in the manufacture of sewing silk after being purchased the was taken to bos elder where it laid idle until taken to salt lake city a short time ago six years ago utan comity petitioned the legislature for an appropriation for the purchasing of necessary machinery accompanied with statistics of what trees were being grown necessary in silk culture persons employed cocoons raised and everything connected with the silk industry throughout this territory had j that petition been granted there would have been many hundreds of dollars kept at home instead of beang sent out of the country besides the employment of many which have laid idle I 1 nm yours respectfully chairman af pf the committee on silk industry of the central board of trade salt lake city |
