Show RECITES HOW SPANISH FORK VOTERS THEIR CAUCUS when city officers were nominated for the late election of the after reading some of the papers relating to spanish fork politics I 1 will endeavor to state the facts in regard to our caucus meeting A notice was put up for a public caucus of the peoples party to meet in the city hall on the ath dinst at 2 p in but previous to this some four or five private meetings were held by certain parties who fora great many years have tried to have things their own way on tuesday the ath dinst at about p m some thirty er forty of the parties referred to entered the city hall and placed four of their number at the door to keep out a certain class of the peoples party at about five minutes to 2 p m two of our respected and pioneer citizens came to the door which was shut against them and were told that they could not go in when W 0 creer observed this he said stop me gentlemen if you can and walked in some four or five following in about ten minutes there was a general row at the door W 0 creer arose and addressing the chair said mr chairman if you do not take those doorkeepers away there will be a public riot the chairman who is also the mayor of the let there ba riot then this was echoed by two cr three others of the party while this was taking place on the inside some eight or ten men forced the door open and passed in after a few minutes order was restored and business commenced by a dation from C H hales for a committee 0 five on nominations W 0 creer moved an amendment that we nominate from the body of che house the chair ruled the amendment out of order when mr creer made it as a motion then J A bees moved that any person who had voted any other than the peoples ticket at the previous august election unless such person recant could not be allowed to take part in this meeting this was the bird motion before the house at the aade time W 0 creer claimed that mr bees motion was out of order overruled by the chairman Q D aneli offered an amendment that any person who was a candidate and knowingly received any vote on any other party ticket and allowed his name to run without protest than he peoples party tick etor canvassed for another ticket be not allowed tc cake part in this meeting W 0 creer moved as an amend ment to the amendment that all those of the peoples party who were willing fco sustain the ticket gotten up at this caucus should have the right to vote in the meeting carried to 91 at this stage of the proceedings the opposite party moved to adjourn convened reconvened re at 7 p m when the motion for the committee of five came before the house again and the amendment to nominate from the body of the house the motion prevailed 99 to 94 here the question was again raised as to who should be allowed to vote and one of our most respected citizens was singled out and accused of canvassing an independent peoples party ticket at tho august election when the gentlemen referred to aobert mckell arose and explained his reasons for doing so namely that he had been falsely accused by this same party in a previous caucus meeting and prevented from speaking in his own defense he stated that ho had always sustained the peoples party ticket never had voted with the liberals and would sustain the ticket gotten up by this caucus provided they would give him fair play arose accused mr makell of treachery to the peoples party ticket and were replied to by W 0 creer and T D evans who defended this aged pioneer against the unjust assaults on his integrity and showed the causes that had led to the split in ahe peoples party those in the opposition then moved for an adjournment until next morning the ayes and nays were called and the meeting was declared adjourned W 0 creer called for a count the nays being in a great majority the chairman refused mr creer said mr chairman be fair give us fair play the chairman responded wo dont want to be fair at a few minutes to 10 on the following morning some twenty five or thirty of the opposition met tha chairman called the meeting to order stating that they were now ready for business when gr D snell moved to addoum and yet nu secretary appeared on the scene with minutes of the adjourned meeting an adjournment was taken when some parties present taking out their watches showed that it was not 10 telling the people to wait until the time when the meeting was to proceed with the business at about twenty minutes past 10 thore were about citizens gathered and the caucus proceeded with the nominations for city officers cerf then the bil retired to the meetinghouse meeting house and held their caucus the result of which was the placing of two tickets in tha field terminating in the defeat of the peopled ticket abc the polls on monday SPANISH FOBS feb 16 1889 two preat enemies hoods apar illa and impure blood the latter ia utterly debated by th peculiar nedi acme |
