Tho poor people of tho city were not allowed to pass Christmas in a manner contrary to tho usual custom, as every family, found to bo worthy and in nood,-wa5 generously remembered both by tho Yoluntcore of Amorica and by tho Salvation Army. During Christmas Christ-mas morning tho Salvation Army distributed dis-tributed botweeu thirty and forty baskets bas-kets among tho poor families, each basket bas-ket laden with good things for the table, such as turkey, beef, potatoes, colery, cranberry sauco and the liko, and a little- Christmas cheer was thus carried into each of these homes. The Volunteers of America mado oven moro of tho day than the Salvation Salva-tion Army, in that they distributed upward ol 150 baskots to tho families who came to thoir notice. Names of deserving poor wero furnished to the Volunteers by the Associated Charities, and to oach of theso a basket was sent, which not only served them with a suitablo Christmas dinner, but contained con-tained enough to supply thoir wants for several dayB to come. Owing to the fact that a largo number num-ber of tho children of the city woro . entertained by a public-spirited lady, cho Salvation Army decided to pos't-p pos't-p pone tho Christmas tree until Monday ovoniug at 7:30 o'clock, when Santa I Claus will 'isit tho Salvation Army ! headquarters. Tho tree itself will bo the largest used in the city, and it will be laden from top to bottom with gifts of various kinds for the littlo folks, whoso parents havo been unable to do for them what was in their hearts upon the same day as the children of tho well-to-do enjoyed their visitation from good old St. Nick. This treo will be the real effort of the Salvation Army people, and they will do all in their power to raako the occasion a gladsome and memorable event, i |
