Show I PIONEER JOURNALIST OF KANSAS IS DEAD KANSAS CITY, Dec. 25. Charles West Spalding, it pioneer nowspapor man of Kansas, dld at the home of his son in I Kansas City, Kan., today, aged 70 years. I Mr. Spalding Ib said to havo been the first man to receive a president's messago by telegraph, having been employed at the time as an operator In Chicago. At different times he played first violin In Uie original McVlckors theater, Chicago, and was organist of the St. Mary's cathedral ca-thedral of that city. He was a member of tho old Kentucky Cotton minstrel troupe. During the civil war he was a special correspondent of tho Chicago Times, and in 1873 he engaged in newspaper news-paper work in Kansas. |
