Show BRUTAL MURDERS Bf PIRATES (HI STEAMER Details of How American Missionary Mis-sionary aiid Others Were Slain Received. VICTORIA, Aug. 11. Details of the attack at-tack on the British steamer Salnam by ChlricHe pirates on the West river, and Ihe murder of Dr. MacDonald, a missionary, mission-ary, nnd some of tho crew, were received by the Bteamcr Mouteaglo, which arrived from the Orient today. Joslln was shot , in the chest, as he ran forward to aid the Indian and Chinese sailors. Dr, MacDonald, Mac-Donald, who ran to offer aid, dragged the captain back to the salon, being barricaded barri-caded for defense by the engineer. Two windows remained open and the pirates fired through these at tho men Inside. The men hid under the dining table. Dr. MacDonald was struck by a bullet flred at close range, and lustantly killed. Capt. Joslln realized the Impossibility Impos-sibility of reaching the bridge, showed presenco of mind by throwing himself on the deck In the passenger cabin, pretending pre-tending to be dead. Tho pirates tore off his coat and trousers, and a ring from his finger, and left him, after giving him a number of kicks. Blood flowed freely from his chest, and he remained motionless, motion-less, the pirates being deceived Into thinking him dead. The chief engineer hid under the boilers and after searching search-ing for an hour for him the pirates turned their attention to the Chinese passengers and crew, robbing them of everything thoy possessed. After looting loot-ing the vossol thoy dropped her anchor and left In five native boats. Capt. Joslln Jos-lln lay Immovable for au hour after thoy had gone, before venturing to crawl from the cabin. On arrival at Samshul the piracy was reported to II. M. S. Moorhan, which started In pursuit and captured some of tho pirates. |
