Show THE TRUE POSITION. YTo print on this page this morning a first-rate editorial from the Christian Herald on the general relations of tho Smoot case to the Senate and to tho country. We agreo with the Herald that tho report of tho Committee on Privileges and Elections is a distinct triumph for tho Women's Committee. It is also an equal triumph for patriotic discernment and tho sifting out of irrelevant matter mat-ter from the main case. The quibbling efforts of Senator Smoot and his friends to befog tho real Issue is taken note of by the Herald, and the claim that thoso advocates mako that the petitions aro an attempt to Influence the Senate to a decision based upon tho popular prejudice, Is earnestly and easily refuted. The truth Is thaE tho popular volco upon this question Is tho true voice. The people of the country at large reallzo fully the menace of the cccleslastlclsm which now prevails in Utah to tho intrusion upon civil government, the destruction of the liberties of Its peoplo and the deflanco de-flanco of the institutions of this country. coun-try. Neither is it truo that tho case against Senator Smoot rests In tho least degreo upon his being a Mormon. Nor is there any attack upon anybody's religion re-ligion or conscience. Tho plain fact is that all that Is required of Smoot and the rest of tho Mormon hierarchy is that they shall cease their efforts to debauch de-bauch free institutions in this Stato and where their influence controls; that they shall entirely abrogate their civic functions, give up their civil and temporal tem-poral government, and let tho peoplo alone altogether In all matters pertaining pertain-ing to politics, business, and civic government, gov-ernment, confining their efforts as the leaders In other churches do. to their religious doctrines and tho care of the souls of the members of their church. Tho case against Senator Smoot is that he Is a member of this alien and hostile civil government which has been erected here in the midst of tho domain of the United States; that he is a high officer in that civil government, and has taken oaths In it and has Incurred obligations obli-gations of so-called duty which require him to maintain that alien government and defy and resist the Government of the United States, as well as to override over-ride nil civil government that may be erected within this State. Ho Is a defender de-fender and sustalner of polygamy In that he consents to others entorlng Into In-to tho polygamous relation without his taking any steps to prevent or expose tholr transgressions. Not only does ho fall to do his duty in this regard, but ho absolutely and positively sustains them In their vicious course by holding them up to the world and voting for them In the Mormon conferences as men of God, whose example It is good to follow and whoso instructions are binding upon tho people. It Is quite Impossible Im-possible to segregate Smoot's Apostle-ship Apostle-ship from his Scnatorshlp. It is equally Impossible to separate him In any capacity capa-city from the polygamous cult of tho church which ho supports and defends, and also from his official position In that civil and alien government which recognizes no lawful authority save Its own. The Christian Herald Is absolutely right; the peoplo of tho country understand under-stand this question thoroughly; and Senator Smoot has no right on any consideration which involves popular government or any connection with the U. S. Senate, or any civil position; because whatever position ho may hold JI h rlnlma. title, und or anv oivU kov crnment. It is antagonistic and subordinate subordi-nate to his position In tho church government, gov-ernment, which he holds supreme. |
