Show VIOLATES LSI W; GIVEN STIFF SENTENCE Frank D. Cooper, Montana Stockman, Fined and Given Jail Sentence. Special to The Tribune. HELENA, Mont.. July 22. Judge W. IT. Hunt in the United States court this afternoon sentenced - 'Frank" 'P. Cooper; former chairman of tlie Board of Commissioners Com-missioners of Cascade county and a prominent prom-inent Northern Montana livestock man. to pay a fine of ?500 and serve, fifteen days i ntho Lewis and Clark county jail. Cooper having been Convicted of a violation vio-lation of tho federal land laws. Cooper's lawyers gave notice of an appeal to the Appellate court, and this will act as a stay of the sentence until decided. This Is the most severe sentence ever Imposed in Montana, and before imposing im-posing It. Judge Hunt stated that men must not fly in the face of the laws of the United States, this coming as a reply to the plea for clemency bv Cooper's Coo-per's lawyer, who urged that his" client had done only that which custom had sanctioned in the West for time immemorial. |
