Show Steamer Columbia, Heavily Laden With H Excursionists, Rammed by Lumber H Schooner Goes Down Off H Coast of California. . , X, H DISASTER OCCURRED AT MIDNIGHT, H WHILE PASSENGERS AND CREW SLEPT One Hundred Women on Board, and Most of These Suffered Death Many Eastern People Among Victims. SAN FRANCISCO, July 22. In one of the worst marine disasters in the history of Iho California coast about ono hundred lives wero lost", as i far as has been learned, by a midnight collision between tho steamer Columbia and tho steam lumber schooner San Pedro in Shelter Cove, twelve miles southwest of the Mendocino-Humboldt county line, between 12 and 1 o'clock yesterday morning. Only meager details of tho tragedy havo been received, though very effort has been made to get the facta. Scores of telegrnniB to Eureka, the nearest point of importance, remain unanswered. un-answered. The few details "known here wero brought by the steamer Roanoke and tho steam schooner Daisy Mitchell, which arrived in San Francisco Fran-cisco this afternoon. The Columbia, a 300-.foofc stoel vessel ves-sel of the San Francisco and Portland Steamship company, while bound from San Francisco for .Portland, Or., with 1S9 passengers nnd a crew of sixty, collided with and was rammed by the San Pedro, a 160-foot wooden schooner, Houth-bound for this city. The sea w.as arnqoth, but tlie weather was foprv. The San Pedro, looming out of the mist a. four ship lengths away, bore down ou tho Columbia at high speed, despite frantic efforts to clear, and -with a grinding crash sank her stem fully ten feet into the Columbia's port bow. Passengers and Crew Asleep. Nearly all of the Columbia's, passengers, passen-gers, and many of her crow, were asleep in their cabins and bunks when the crash came. As tho San Pedro backed away the sea poured in through the ragged hole in the Columbia's bow, above and below her water line, and in fivo minutes tho vessel sank to the bottom, tho deep waters of Shelter Cove covering even the tips of her masts. The story of thnt five minutes is yet to bo told, and until it is told lor some survivor the facts of tho tragedy can be but guessed at. According to J. S. Flynn. a passenger on tho Roanoke, Captain Dorau of the Columbia succeeded suc-ceeded in launching four lifeboats and two rafts before the Columbia sank. Flynn in an iutericw is quoted as saying say-ing that eighty-six passengers all men got. away in this manner, and were saved; that Captain Doran' acted with great coolness in tho face of death, and went down with his ship. Shortlv aftor the collision the steamers steam-ers Roanoke and George W. Elder and tho steam schooner Daisy Mitchell, all southhound. came on tho scono and stood by. The Elder took the San Pedro Pe-dro in 'tow and the latest report announces an-nounces their arrival in Eureka. The stem of the San Pedro was smashed to splinters, and she was settling and had a hcavj- list when taken in tow. Cap. tain Ilanseu remained on board. One Raft Picked Up. Tho Daisy Mitchell offerod assistance to tho Elder, but this was declined. She picked up a life-boat and a raft of the Columbia's and brought them to this city. Near tho scene of the wreck the Roanoke picked up a life-raft, nnd found underneath it the dead body of a passenger, supposedly Edward Butlor of Portsmouth, .N. H. List or survivors.
