Show FUSION UNDER THE LASH. It is astonishing to seo the brutal tactics that are being pursued by thoso "Republicans" (and the are apparently appa-rently tho only ones wh'o arc urging it) who advocate fusion on tho Council ticket in certain of tho wards of this city. In one hand is a brandished whip .by which tho "Democrats" are being belabored mercilessly and with cruel taunts because they don't, hustle for fusion; the other hand is extended for a friendly shake and with an inviting welcome to more intimate relations. It takes an enormous amount of gull for the so-called Republican party of this neighborhood to make any advances whatever to the "Democratic" party. The "Republicans" have been basting the very life out of the "Democratic" parly for several elections, and tho so-called so-called organ of the so-called Republican party continues its assaults and cruol taunts upon tho "Democratic" party right along. Apparently it has abandoned aban-doned all idea of a friendly fusion, and now inlands to hnvo fusion by force. Its course illustrates the old story of tho rovivalisfc who was accused not of putting an enticing bait upon his hook when he preached to tho sinners, but of pursuing tho tacticB of a fisherman who might thrust lino, pole and all in tho water with the ejaculation, "Bite or bo damned! " Tho leaders of the " Republican " party here have never shown tho least consideration for the "Democrats." They have used tho "Democratic" party morcly as a slop-gap, a wind-broak, wind-broak, a door mat, or anything clso that they havo found use for in nuy capacity capac-ity except that of honorablo companionship. compan-ionship. Tho Democracy was always given in campaigns some subordinate use which would lend to the advantage of the dominant "Republican" sentiment senti-ment of tho Mormon church. Bur, now, all at onco there began a system of wheedling, of promising to divide, of cajolery, of coaxing, thai was at onco comical and disgusting. This era, however, how-ever, appears to havo passed now, and the vicious organ of the "Republican" bosses comes out as Iho bulldozer of the occasion. It demands to know what Morris has to say about this fusion proposition. It scores tho Herald (sometimes (some-times supposod to bo tho "Democratic" organ) for its editorial announcement that, it would oppose fusion, both in gonoraj and in detail. This "Republican" "Repub-lican" organ quotes figures, designed no doubt to bluff Morris off tho track, or to paralyze his efforts in this campaign; cam-paign; thoso figures hnving a purport and meaning that he has no show whatever what-ever for election, no matter how much of a fight ho may make. And the do-mand do-mand is made of him, coarsely and truculently, that he come into the fusion fu-sion ranks or tell the reason why. All this .bitter opposition, all this railing, all this personal assault upon Morris, all this contemptuous reference to the "Democratic" party strength, can hardl have much effect in winning win-ning "Democrats" over to fusion. But evidently the "Republican" bosses havo come to tho conclusion thai they rule the roost anyhow, and f that they can compel tho "Democrats" to do what, the want whether tho "Democrats" "Demo-crats" want to or not. It is a mighty interesting situation as a fight, bul as a. question of fusion we could imagine something a good deal more enticing than this sort of brutal abuse and malignant, ma-lignant, rant;. |
