Show WHY GENTILESP It is sometimes asked why the non-Mormons non-Mormons here are called Gentiles, and h they accept that word as a designation desig-nation for themselves, and why the American party Is spoken of as the Gentile part; So far as the latter is concerned. It Is a misnomer, though it may be a convenience at times to use that word. But the American party In Its foundation founda-tion and declaration of principles, put up no barriers such as the use of the word "Gentile" as applied to it as a name would Imply. On the contrary, Its foundation was broad and liberal, Inviting In-viting to Its ranks all who would be free and untrammeled In their political politi-cal principles and acts The complete control of the two old parties bv the ccclesiasts made the formation of the new party of freedom a necessity, and the refuge it affords to all who are tlre-d of priest-ridden parties, a haven of security from the cross-currents of the shifty priestcraft control, with Its deman 1 ui on voters that they shall vote the "Republican" ticket one year, the Democratic 1 ticket the next yeur. and so on in turn as the Interests of selfish, avarbious. ambitious and arrogant arro-gant church b-adcrs may dictate. Now, as to the use of the word "Gentile' "Gen-tile' to designate the non-Mormon population. It is a term applied by the Mormon speakers and writers to all not of their sect, from a time far back of the settlement of Utah. When the Gentiles began to come In here a little, lit-tle, the use of the term was continued against them, as a reproach or con-l con-l tumely, But Ihe use of the word was fio general so predominant, that the non-Mormor.s perforce were practlcaWy ohiiged to accent it. whether they would n;ivo p,,f.r,.. I to do so or not And It was no long lime until the use of the term was MJ universal and matter-of-course that U was on everybody's tongue, and with no thought In the Gentile mind of any obloquy.
