Show TO THE LOVERS OF FREEDOM IN UTAH. This good Any is a hoihi occasion fot the voters of s"it Lake City to con-si. con-si. ler by v but ac tion of i heirs on election dny they con beat enhance the welfare of Salt Lake, nnd Indeed the welfare of the State of Utah. In a business way, in our National relations, in ethic al and Intellectual advancemenl and how they may best vote In order to bring I'tah back to her position of respect toward the Nation and respect by the Nation. Speaking f the larger parties which might hop for success at the polls, tin re are but two one Is the American party, undivided, vigorous, full of certainty as to ac hievement mi election day, and Rivina evidence by the character char-acter of ta nominees to all citizens of snlt ike and Utah that this municipality mu-nicipality will be well governed under the American administration; and th llicr of the larger parties Is the church party. Jealously divided into two parts, with no reasonable expectation thai the divided ends can i"- brought together. Under the tacit promise made to Mayor Morris, for his subserviency In franchise matters, the chief hierarch could not iini the rlghl time to restrain Morris from entering the field although the Mayor threatened on more than on.- occasion to withdraw from nil possible pandl-daoy, pandl-daoy, because he had heard rumors that the church strength would be thrown to the Republican nominee. 'n the other hand, with his reputation to maintain at Washington, Apoatle-Sen.tlor Smoot and his immediate suppoii-I suppoii-I 18 In the hierarchy fell thai a vigorous Republll an movement should le made and a Republican candidate elected if possible, in this strange war the hierarch found himself between two factions and two feelings Within the hierarchy itself. Never before In the recent history of the church In poll-tics poll-tics ;is there ever so nearly an equal div ision i ine the one side stand the cohorts of Republicans led by Smoot, and on the other side within the hiKh ranks of the eccleslasts stands President Winder with several apostolic followers, follow-ers, determined to re-elect Mayor Morris. It Is true that while this Is being written, President Joseph F. Smith could call all the members of the hle-rarehy hle-rarehy Into a 1 sacred room" of th temple, and there In solemn council declare "This Is the will of the Lord." and without a word of remonstrant e. all of the members Of the hierarchy would be compelled to take one side in the tight either side. Rut Which side? That is the question whl. h Joseph F Smith has rot yet been ablo to answer to his own mind. Private information Is to the effect ef-fect that be has been troubled greatly by the counter statements Of the politicians Trusted Democrats of the quorum have assured him that the only chance was with Morris; and equally trusted Republicans of the 'iiiorum have endeavored to persuade him that the best opportunity was with Lynch. Which? If be knew the answer to that simple question Which? Joseph F Smith would endeavor to sweep this city on election day for his church party, whether that portion led by Lynch of that portion led by Morris BUl he has not yet heard the answer. That strange, mysterious Inspiration, Inspira-tion, revelation, psycho-self, catllcpsy (or whatever else he may choose to rail the vibrations Of his selfish mind when wrought to a passignate frenzy has not yet indicated to him which of the two crowds In the church party Is guessing right ami which Is guessing wrong. And so at this writing Joseph has not given the word. In the councils which have been held he has refused to say, "This Is the will of the Lord: that you Democrats shall be Republicans," or "that you Republicans shall become Democrats." What he has said up to th present writing is I want all you brethren tO work most earnestly to defeat the American ticket. I want you to counsel every Latter-day Saint to cast his ballot against that ticket. It must be defeated; for the loss of Salt Lake means the loss of Ogden. and the loss Of Salt Lake and Weber counties, and finally the loss of the whole State.' Now, that Is the chaotic condition on the side of the party which Is opposed op-posed to the solid American forces. The church meddles dally and hourly In this affair, und yet does not largely Influence the voters, because It does not yet m ike the choice and stake all on ono candidate. The American party Is without a split Never before were the people more united In a determination to achieve their liberties than arc the American Amer-ican men and women of this city of Salt Lake. Never before was there a better chance for a reform element to carry a municipality. Americans, the city Is ours, in trust for the citizens, If we but work to our full strength from now to the close of election day. Is there any wonder in the mind of an Intelligent reader at the solidarity solidar-ity of American feeling and at the vacillation of the church party leader? In the case of American success the city will have an Increase of the best kind of population; it will have an early accession of prosperity; It will have more work for worklngmen nnd more business for business men; It will not betray any rights of the city to any church, to any corporation, to any Individual. In-dividual. It will not discriminate unfairly between citizens of this community commu-nity In public contracts and labor; It will have gained It own self-respect; it Will send a message to the Republic that AmSTCfcns here, rising In the dignity dig-nity of their citizenship In this Republic, have w r.-stc-d the capital of a blasphemous prophet frlm his political grasp, and have restored It to tho possession of the people. In the case of hierarchical success (Republicans or Democrats, It Is all the same) the city's prosperity will be retarded to a marked extent; the values of Bait Lake and the certainty of her greatness will not be destroyed but will be obscured until such time as Americans can compel the hierarchy to r.-tlre taxes will remain high, with no corresponding benefits, franchises Will be given away at the will of an ecclesiastical master; the water question will be paltered with as never before was r public question paltered with In Utah; Gentiles and Mormons alike will feel that they have at leaM two more y rs of waiting work Imposed upon them by this ecclesiastical success; the Gentile will realize that he must labor a little harder and wait a little longer, long-er, and the Mormon real estate owner and business man and laboring man will feel that though his church has triumphed he himself has been defeated In his fair aspirations for success in life Americans. If it Is rlsht to oto for that great business man, that man Of perfect Integrity, Ezra Thompson, for Mayor, and that profound lawyer and philosopher, that honest, soldierly gentleman, Ogden Hlles, for City Attorney, At-torney, and for the other equally good men at the head of the Americ an tl. ket, then It mutt be right and necessary to vote the stialghl American ticket for members of the 'ily Council Wo are passing Into the heroic period for Salt Lake While electing a giant for Mayor, to do 8 giant's work in this city, don t tie his hands with the cutting ar.d gnawing thongs of a City Council controlled by the head of the (Mormon church. The Issues have been presented; the candidates are before you. Now remember re-member you own self-respect; the welfare of this community and the State; the blessing of your own children; the honor of Utah before the Nation; and you will vote the American ticket In Its entirety on election day simply by placing your cross beneath the great American war eagle. |
