At tho very moment -when a strike of moro than 25.000 textile operatives employed In sov-cnty-flvo mills In this city seemed a certainty, cer-tainty, thc situation was suddcnlj'-cloarcd' by tho action of tho Manufacturers' association, asso-ciation, and tho outlook tonight is brighter bright-er than nt any time since the wngo question ques-tion has como to tho front. Ask for Conferences. Meetings of tho various unions of textile tex-tile workers had been called for tonight to take action on the question of calling a strike In all the cotton factories controlled con-trolled by members of the Manufacturers' association. Late this afternoon, however, how-ever, a committee representing the manufacturers manu-facturers hold a conference with a committee com-mittee from tho textile council. Tho manufacturers man-ufacturers expressed tho hope that a com-promlso com-promlso might be reached, and requested that the unions take no action on the matter mat-ter of calling a strlko beforo next Monday Mon-day night. This request was made. It was explained, In order that tho manufacturers manufactur-ers nnd tho operatives, through their committees, com-mittees, might hold further conferences. Unions Acquiesce. Tho committee representing the textile council acquiesced and the secretaries of the various orders were instructed to present pre-sent the proposition of the manufacturers before tho various bodies. Beforo tonight's to-night's meeting four or live organizations of tho weavers, uplnn'ors, carders and loom fixers voted unanimously to postpone post-pone strike action until next Friday, when the unions will again meet A conferenco between committees representing rep-resenting the manufacturers and the operatives op-eratives will bo held at 2:30 o'clock next Monday afternoon It Is now believed in union circles that there will bo no strike. Thc manufacturers manufac-turers have shown a desire to offect a compromise, and It is thought that tho wngo question will be adjusted satisfactorily. |
