Show A WRETCHED FAILURE. Referring by Innuendo to the Republican Repub-lican municipal campaign, the Deseret News speaks of It as "a wretched failure fail-ure In political management." That is an unusually candid and truthful statement from that quarter. No one knows better than the writer In the News what the plan was, and no one knows better than the writer In the News how the plan failed. There certainly cer-tainly must have been woeful mismanagement misman-agement by the church Republican quorum, when the church Democratic quorum could maintain a plot under the noses of Smoot and his colleagues and carry that plot to fruition, witn the assent of the hierarchy and even with Smoot's reluctant, but enforced, acquiescence ac-quiescence on election da. Inasmuch as the News and the organ of the church Republican quorum, and all other sources of public expression necessary nec-essary to make the case, have admitted the use of Influence by churchmen of high degree, there can be no longer any dispute of the assertion that the hlerarchs hle-rarchs had a plan, or alternative plans, and attempted to carry one, or the other, oth-er, or both, to a consummation The great trouble was that the cause of the Republican quorum was In the custody of Reed Smoot, of Provo. and that, while he was able to gain the confidence confi-dence of the hierarchy in his ability to outrun Morris with Lynch, the offen-slvcness offen-slvcness of his personality here added to the general and deserved unpopularity unpopular-ity which he now "enjoys" In this State made his scheme, even with the assent as-sent of the hierarchy, an Impossibility. Cunning men in the church Democratic quorum anticipated the event, made their preparations accordingly, and at the noon hour of election day thpy exposed ex-posed the utter fallacy of Smoot's claims, and the utter futility of his attempt at-tempt to elect Mr Lynch as Mayor. Wretched management Indeed! The whole affair, so far as the church Republican Re-publican quorum and the church Democratic Dem-ocratic quorum are concerned, wajt wretched. Each used all the Influence It possessed for weeks before election day to sway the hierarchy to Its side. Each side got the hierarchical help In Its turn, the Democrats getting it last apd best, and being the lees offensive, were able to make tho better use of It; but even they were not able to force or cajole a plurality of votes Into the box. The church political move In the last municipal campaign was "a wretched failure In political management " The church believed that It had the votes. It did not know exactly how to use them. It was not restrained by any regard re-gard for the decencloe, but was merely "flabbergasted " |
