Show BROADENING NATIONALITY. It Is a striking evidence of the broadening broad-ening view of the public, In a National sense, to see a prominent policy-holder in Insurance companies formally apply ap-ply to tho President for an Investigation Investiga-tion of the life insuranco business Mr. W. F. King, former president of the New York Merchants' association, has done this. He cites the revelations in the Equitable Life Assurance society socie-ty and the scandals connected with them as the reasons for the Investigation, Investiga-tion, a,nd the Investigation Into the Standard OH company and the Beef Trust as precedents. Mr. King's position Is fairly Justified under tho corporation legislation of Congress, which seems broad enough to cover his request. The Insuranco com-, panics do an Interstate business, as the other corporations named do. and the startling revelations ma'de by Mr. Law-son Law-son and others relative to tho operation opera-tion and use of the tremendous surpluses sur-pluses held by these life Insurance companies, com-panies, give ground for apprehension, and ample reason for inquiry. Mr. Lawson has been particularly active ac-tive of late In making vehement representations repre-sentations upon this subject. His fight is primarily with the Standard OH and the Amalgamated Ho has been at it a year, and has Indeed made startling revelations, as he promised to do, In his "Frenzied Finance." He shows ample reason for Natlonai interference. His latest move Is to rssue a broad sheet containing an appeal to the press to "give him a lift." He disclaims all idea of making anything by hla revelations reve-lations of the bad conditions that prevail pre-vail In our ' high finance" centers; protests pro-tests that he Is a million dollars poorer than when he started In on his campaign, cam-paign, a year ago, and offers to let the editors having hang and quarter him If any one can show how he is to benefit by the Remedy he means to propose But In this appeal he does not propose pro-pose the remedy; he merely appeals to the people to prepare the way for It, and this Is what they must do; I'm doing all In my power and lntond to, to get ovory Investor man, woman and child In America, to sell at present high prices cn to the scheming, speculating, plundering "System" every share of stock they own, and after they have dono so and tho "System" Is loaded with billions bil-lions of these stocks, I will endeavor to have the people take their money out of tho banks to tho end that the ' Svstetn" cannot uso It to maintain their fictitious price Structure, and when they cannot do this, prices will decline, and at this stage I will give the peoplo my Remedy. A National bear raid such as this on stocks would flatten the market sure enough. It would ruin everybody, the mass of the people Included. It Is a form of National action which, while It would be Immeasurably destructive, Is fortunately absolutely Impossible. |
