Show HONORS TO THE LOYAL EIUHT The banquet tendered by the Salt Lake Real BSltAte Men's Association to the faithful eight members of tho City Council who have proved themselves loyal to the city In the franchise grab, Is n proper testimonial And It is right and cheering to recognize worthy ser-Vlce ser-Vlce In this conspicuous and grateful v. a v There is no doubt but that the vote of these honorable men. tho loyal Gentile Councllmen. has saved the city, and will contlnuo to save It. from the worst calamity with which It Is or could he threatened. This franchise proposition is a scheme which would paralyzo the city's growth and progress, pro-gress, sacrificing the public Interests to tho private Interests of President Joseph Jo-seph F. Smith of the Mormon church and of tho franchise-grabbing company, com-pany, It was a dangerous and desperate raid which President Smith organised against this city, for his private and corporate advantage. It would menu at least ten million dollars' gain to him and his company; and he peeks this gain at the cost o? draining the life-blood life-blood of the city and clapping a blistering blis-tering mortgage on Its future. It was a cunningly-planned plot. Tho city had Just voted a minion aoi-lars aoi-lars In bonds to Improve Its water system sys-tem and complete Its sewer dra!n-Th dra!n-Th company had a long disused and probably forfeited claim of a water right at the mouth of Big Cottonwood canyon, which lis cunning head saw Infinite chances In. He made It the basis of a demand for a consolidation and an extension of tho life of his franchises that even his most blatant defender pronounced to be beyond reason. rea-son. A modification was thereupon consented to, but still leaving the application ap-plication In the outrageous form In which it was presented last Monday night. Against this virulent measure, the eight Gentile members of tho Council arrayed themselves In 6olld and conquering con-quering phalanx. They voted M ma.s against the attempt to railroad the measure through, ond forced its reference refer-ence to the City Attorney. For tho firm stand they thus took against this measure which would cer tainly paralyzo the city, these eignt members era entitled to the thanks of every friend of Salt Lake, and to honorable hon-orable remembrance In every loyal breast. They aro averting a great calamity ca-lamity from this city. The honor paid them by the Real Estate Association is amply deserved; and tho recognition will be applauded by a generous public as both timely and well put. honorable alike to the hosts and to the guests. |
