Tho battleship battle-ship Kansas, tho largest war vessel ever built In tho East, was launched at 12.17 p. m. today at the yards of the Now York Shipbuilding company In Camden, N. J. Tho launching was witnessed by Gov. Hoch of Kansas, whoso daughter acted as sponsor for the ship. Along with tho Govornor was a christening party of thirty Kansanc. Christened With Water. An unusual feature of tho launching was the fact that the vessel wa3 christened chris-tened with spring water brought from Kansas by Gov. Hoch, Instead of the customary bottle of champagne. This was tho first time that water Instead of wlno has been used In launching a vessel In this vicinity. Gov. Hoch of Kansas made tho suggestion sugges-tion and ho mado tho announcement before be-fore tho launching that the christening bottle contained only water. Sister Ship of Vermont. Tho Kansas Is a sl3ter ship of tho Vermont, Ver-mont, now being built at tho yards of tho Fore River Ship and Englno Building company, Qulncy, Mass. Sho will havo the same armament as tho battleship Minnesota, 'launched several months ago at Newport News. |
