Show PRESIDENT WILL SEE SUBMARINE AT WORK Will Not Himself Take the Plunge, l)ut Wants to See It Done. OYSTER BAY, Aug. 12. Some time during the next -week or ten dayu President Presi-dent Roosevelt will witness a test of tho submarlno boat Plunger. Tho exhibition exhibi-tion will tako plnco In Long Island sound, a short distance from tho entrance en-trance to Oyster Bay. Arrangements for tho teat have not yet been completed, com-pleted, but tho Plunger Is being put In condition at the Brooklyn navyyard. Her commander, Lieut. Charles Nelson, Nel-son, la recognized In the navy aa one of the most fearless and accomplished officers In the service. His record attracted at-tracted tho attention of tho President, who gave directions that Lieut, Nelson should come to Oyster Bay In the Plunger In order that ho might havo opportunity to witness personally tho practical performances of tho llttlo vessel. ves-sel. No Thought of Being Aboard. Of course, the President has no thought of being nboard the Plunger during tho tests. He entertains no fear of posslblo mishap, but ho believes that ho could achlcvo no good result by being be-ing on board the vessel whllo the tests are In progress, and, In fact, that ho simply would bo In the way. Ho will view the work of tho vessel from tho deck of tho naval yacht Sylph. Before tho Plunger Is put through her paces the President probably will make an examination of the vessel In order that he may havo a thorough understanding under-standing of the operations of the boat. The President Is anxious to encourage encour-age officials of the navy to undertake original and daring work. Ho believes thoroughly In Individual Initiative In officers, and admires those who are willing will-ing to assume personal risks for the betterment of the service and for the honor of the country. A few days ago the President had Commander Sims as a guest at lunoh-eon. lunoh-eon. Mr. Sims has made a special study of gunnery. Many of his suggestions sugges-tions were adopted. The British navy also has adopted, many of tho plans and suggestions offered by Commander Sims. |
