Show BINGHAM BOWS TO JORDAN 13-6 FOR FIRST 1940 DEFEAT Bingham high school gridders dropped their first contest of the season yesterday when they were defeated by the powerful Beet-diggers Beet-diggers of Jordan 13-6, before a packed stadium at Copperton. The two teams fought on an even basis until about one minute min-ute before half time when Bob Price, Jordan quarterback, bucked buck-ed the bail over from the three-yard three-yard line, Jordan failed to convert, con-vert, leaving the score 6-0. The locals had the advantage on yardage gained in the first half. Jordan's touchdown came after a Bingham lateral pass play from Kimmy Goff to Sergio Alvarez was fumbled and Jordan recovered recover-ed on Bingham's 30 yard line and scored on successive downs. Jordan tallied their second touchdown when early in the third quarter Goff fumbled a pass from center on Bingham's own seven-yard line and in an effort to pick up the ball, Goff kicked it into the end zone where Jordan Jor-dan pounced on it for a touchdown. touch-down. The Beetdiggers' conversion conver-sion was good, making the score read 13-0. Early in the fourth period Bingham began using their spread formation, taking the ball on their own 40 yard line after Jordan Jor-dan had fumbled. Goff picked up 15 yards through the center of the line on the fake spread. Alvarez Al-varez then tossed a pass to Frank Nelson which was good for five yards. On a series of line smashes Goff went over for Bingham's only counter. Stanley Long failed fail-ed to convert for the extra point. During the balance of the fourth period the Miners tried desperately to score from their spread formation, but was unable un-able to get a man loose. Yesterday's game was cleanly played and hard fought. There were only two five yard penalties penal-ties called in the entire game, one on each team. Last Friday Bingham defeated the large Tooele team 28-0. On Wednesday Granite's second team and Grantsville tied 6-6. Murray defeated Davis 13-0 Thursday in another Jordan district dis-trict contest. Bingham travels to Murray next Friday afternoon for a region reg-ion game. |
