Neilson shows these two boys how to use educational educational educational toys Some of the t toys ys help teach by helping the t Opportunity Center Cares For Forgotten Children For inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these ye yc have done it unto me This sentence uttered almost 2000 years ears ago has meant much to many persons since then For a group of forgotten chit chi dren in Davis County it now now begins to mean much also These children are being cared for by the Society for Multiple l Handicapped Children Children Children Chil Chil- dren an organization formed in tl this s county in June 1956 to care for children no one else could help They were truly forgotten as far as the world was concerned But now they have a place to learn some of the things others take for granted Things most children are able to learn during their early years CAN LEARN These children were and are not able to learn some of these daily habits as easily however They are arc children who have more than one As such they do not qualify for help in any other public institution institution institution in Utah at the present time except the American Fork School for some And that school s over crowded As Mrs S. S J J. J Harding president president president dent of the society pointed out if the deaf or blind schools at Ogden wont won't take them or orthe orthe orthe the Stoker Annex for Special Education wont won't take them and there is no other place except except except ex ex- American Fork they take them here The include mentally mentally mentally men men- tally retarded Wind spastic spastic- blind deaf-blind deaf etc Some people would classify classify classify classi classi- fy these children as useless hopeless and best forgotten as little more than animals or vegetables But these are the they who have never known of the love that the handicapped child brings with it into this world Mrs Harding said HAS TALENT The work being done by the society is possible largely because because be be- because cause of the efforts of f Mrs Olive Neilson who was hired by the gro group p to supervise Mrs Neilson has been working working working work work- ing with handicapped children for the past 17 years She formerly taught school in southern Utah and Nevada in inthe inthe inthe the small one all schools She cared for retarded children in her home and brought rought them to school During this time she also managed to raise six children of her own without the aid of their father who died some years ago CAME IE TO Several years ago she moved to Salt Lake City to teach Members of the society hearing hearing hearing hear hear- ing of her and the work she had done for over handicapped handicapped handicapped handi handi- capped children hired her for Davis Count County r. r One of the first problems waves getting a place to hold the school Recently the town of North Salt Lake gave an acre of land and the county r commissioners gave a building which would be moved to the thc land The building burned partially partially partially par par- however There was a little fire insurance though and it will be used to help build a new building Some labor has been promised But Butmore work is hard The going going going go go- ing is rough and according to some people But when you have put hours days weeks and even months of hard physical labor into a project project project such as
