Show A GOOD PLACE FOR DEMOCRATS. Those members of tho Democratic party In Utah, who have retained tho convictions which they held at the time of the reconvened convention In opposition opposi-tion to church dictation In politics, are confronted by the gravest question which their party will have met in this State. According to their own view, they have been the victims of ecclesiastical influence for many yenrs. Their party Is now about to partake of this influence. influ-ence. As individuals what course shall they pursue: Accept tho gift and praise heaven for it? Or denounce the scheme of ecclesiastical division of political plunder and refuse to become participants partici-pants In the wrong? It may bo difllcult. It Is a great trial for men to appear In apparent opposition opposi-tion to the success of their party at the polls, even though that success promises to be but fragmentary and evanescent. As a practical political question many of these gentlemen may be In doubt as to whether it would be better to get some power and use It to oppose an extension ex-tension and continuance of church Influence; Influ-ence; or whether It would be better to rondunco their party's hope of ofTlco this year, rather than to hold even .temporary .tem-porary partnership In an acknowledged oVlI. As nn" exponent of American party Ideas The Trlbuno may be permitted by these doubting gcnllemen to express Its view. The Republican party machinery is entirely under apostolic control. 'While that control continues, nothing Is to be expected of the local Republican parly In Utah but servile deference to ecclesiastical eccle-siastical rule. Church leaders now Indicate an Intention In-tention to collude with the Democratic party; and if their purpose shall be carried car-ried out, the machine of that organization organiza-tion will very goon be dominated by an especially consecrated Democratic ap-polntoe ap-polntoe from church headquarters. Even if tho collusion be not approved or even recognized this year, and yet if Democrats take tho offices which It Is proposed to secure for them by this means, it will be scarcely possible for them to rise to tho dignity of resisting when the same plan shall be offered to nerpctuato thorn In official power. The Trlbuno warns Mormons and Gentiles alike that at last the purpose of the church leaders is In danger of achievement. It has conquered the present Republican machine by Its favors; fa-vors; and It has reduced the Democracy to such a low and hopeless state, that many of Its prominent men aro willing to accept the church hospitality even though they must make their bed In the hay lofts and take their breakfast out of the kitchen window. ; With the Republican and Democratic parlies both controlled by representatives representa-tives of the church, what shall tho citizen citi-zen of Independent thought and high patriotic Ideal do to preserve his own Individual rights and maintain the Integrity In-tegrity of free government? ' The American party of the Stale offers of-fers an honorable refuge for every man who opposes church Influence in poll-tic poll-tic or who doubts the propriety of his party's course in this State, whether he be a Republican or Democrat. There certainly can be nothing antagonistic to the most reflncd patriotism in the declarations dec-larations which the American party has made. On the contrary no man who is a real American, who 13 truthful and honest, will dispute one word of the case which tho American party sets before be-fore the voters of this State. Such being be-ing the fact It Is clear that thore Is ono party alliance which removes all doubt and resolves all difficulty. To Democrats Tho Tribune says, ns It has said to the Republicans who constitute con-stitute the main strength of tho American Ameri-can party today: Join an organization whose motives and labors will bo for the permanent rescue of Utah from ecclesiastical ec-clesiastical domination. Remain with It until that end Is effected, for until then there Is no peace in this commonwealth. |
