Show ASPHALT INDUSTRY IN EASTERN UTAH Good Development Being Made in the Proporty of the St. Louis Gil-sonite Gil-sonite Company. t A DECIDED impetus Is to be given soon to the hydrocarbon Industry In eastern "Utah bythe American Rubber and Asphalt company of Chicago. This company some months ago acquired a large tract of gllsonlte ground in the vicinity of Vernal and near to the holdings of the St. Louis Gllsonlte company, from which the greater part of the Utah product has heretofore been shipped. "Under the direction di-rection of A. J. Hill, Its manager, development de-velopment work progressed throughout the winter months with a force of twenty-live men, and the results have been Buch that the company Is now ready to begin shipments on a substantial substan-tial scale. Unlike the most of the work that has been done In that region, the work directed by Mr. Hill has been done through a shaft Instead of tunnels and drifts, so that the greatest depth attained In that kind of mining has been reached. The main shaft Is now down 300 feet and a "well-denned vpln three feet wide and carrying 98 per cent of gllsonlte, or chemically pure asphalt, has been opened and from the formation forma-tion Indications the body of hydrocarbons hydrocar-bons continues-indefinitely both ways from the shaft. By the middle of the month It is the intention of the management to increase in-crease the force to fifty men, and It Is expected that four cars of the asphalt will be mined and shipped. This product prod-uct will be hauled to Price, a distance 120 miles, and then shipped to Chicago wljere it is treated and divided Into numerous commodities'. The chief use of the asphalt, aside from that of street paving, is for the manufacture of varnishes var-nishes and paints, of which It makes Into exceedingly high grade articles. The uses for hydrocarbons of every nature are said to be gradually Increasing, Increas-ing, and the Utah products are growing grow-ing In favor, and those best posted In this department of mining predict that it will continue to Increase in the extent of its operations until It becomes an Acloowledged important Industry. |
