Show FIRE AT MERCUR Another Disastrous Fire Visits Vis-its the Mining Town, and Twelve Buildings Destroy-ed-Loss Estimated at About $15,000. TRIBUNE SPECIAL.l Morcur, Utah, Jan. 30. This place was visited with a disastrous firo early this morning, and for a time If looked as though the entire town would bo swopt by tho flames. Owing to the effective work of the flro department, with the aid of the citizens, the firo was gotten under control after hours of hard work, and a repetition of the conflagration of 1S02, which took In the whole town, was averted. STARTS IN OPERA-HOUSE. Tho fire was first discovered In the opera-house by an Italian, who Immediately Immedi-ately sent In an alwrn to tho flro department. depart-ment. The responso was prompt, but the blaze was under good way and It was Impossible Im-possible to save the building and those adjoining. The heroic efforts of tho firemen fire-men saved tho buildings on the opposlto side of tho street. The flames leaped the narrow thoroughfare and the buildings wero badly scorched but did not catch on fire, There was no wind blowing at the time or tho wholo town would have been doomed. The buildings destroyed and damaged, with estimated loss, aro as follows: THE HEAVIEST LOSERS. A dnnco was given In tho opcra-houso last night by the Young Ladles' Social club, and had tho flro started then the Iroquois disaster might havo been reproduced repro-duced on a smaller scale. As It was, there was no loss of life and no one was Injured. The buildings that were destroyed de-stroyed were soino of tho largest and most prominent In tho place. Tho tele-phono tele-phono office had a narrow escape, and enly tho effective work of tho firemen saved It from destruction. Tho building was damaged to the extent of about $50. The origin of tho flro has not yot been definitely determined, but It Is supposed to havo been duo to a defective flue In tho opera-houso building. |
