HELP FOR A NEIGHBOR. The letter and resolutions from thc Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce were read and thc board voted to accept ac-cept the resolutions and acquiesce in the request of the Los Angeles body. This request was that the Commercial club Join the Los Angeles body in sending a delegation lo Washington to lobby for the 5250,000 appropriation necessary to make San Pedro harbor accessible for deep-draft vessels. This was dono and the committee was appointed as above named. All of these gentlemen are in "Washington or on the way there and are members of the club. It is now up to Los Angeles to be moving The sense of the meeting was that tho matter was of utmost importance and that in order to secure the appropriation appro-priation In this, a Presidential year, when expenses are held down as far as possible, would require some very strenuous work by the lobbyists. Louis C. Kelsey presented the club with valuable maps of Utah lake and thc water system as It was proposed t by the old water committee of the club, just excused, j LOS ANGELES APPEAL. The communication from the Chamber of Commerce at Los Angele3 requested the Commercial club to act with them in an effort to induce Congress to appropriate ap-propriate a sum of money for the improvement im-provement of the Inner harbor at San Pedro. The Los Angeles men expect lo raise $10,000 and serd a delegation of lobbyists lobby-ists to Washington to work on the proper men. It was argued that tho betterment of that harbor at San Pedro would benefit Salt Lake also at its completion, for the San Pedro railroad will have been completed by tho time the harbor is, and the logical route cast for Oriental Orien-tal and South American merchandise would be that route. HELP FROM. ALL SIDES. The commercial bodies at Denver and Butte are also to be gotten Into line, and as strong a showing made as can be. As it stands now the work undertaken on San Pedro harbor, a great stone breakwater, Is nearly completed, but the chief thing that Is wanted by the shippers ship-pers and merchants is a harbor deep enough for the deep-draught liners. In order to make the channel deep enough it would have to be excavated from eighteen feet at low water to twenty-five. twenty-five. The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Com-merce adopted a set of resolutions which were sent to the Commercial club also. The gist of them follows: GIST OF RESOLUTIONS. "'Resolved. That whereas it appears that the shipping business transacted through the port of San Pedro has increased in-creased over .100 per cent within the last six years, nnd has increased In the last year more- than 50 per cent, and that thc increase in harbor receipts of said port Tor the year 1P02, over the year 1001, was 100 )er cent, and the increase in the taid receipts for tho current year over the year 1002 will probably be at least 100 per cent; and. that tho harbor facilities arc totally inadequate for the business done in San Pedro because of a lack of deep ater, thai the future Siowth of the territory whoso business comes through the harbor demands these improvements: that thc board of engineers of the United States have recommended the work of deepening the harbor affecting an available wharfage of seven miles, and that the business Interests of Southern California demand the work. "Resolved, That it is a matter of paramount interest that the Government Govern-ment proceed at once to deepen the harbor, and that we appeal to the 1 Sennlors .and Representatives from the Slato of California to urge an appropriation appro-priation for the work." |
